AK47 (Avtomata Kalashnikova) - Russian machinegun thats used by a lot of people nowadays because its robust and does not mind if you throw it into mud or water. It still works. The MacGyver episode's location is east berlin ( DDR, aka GDR ), wich has been under russian control during the cold war. I am german and i still live in the east side of berlin. I know the history pretty well...

AK's are very reliable in the sense that it will work for a long time after wear and tear, it has good stopping power, and it's cheap. However, it has a relatively low fire rate and mediocre aim, and there are newer versions of AK's on the market. This is probably why the US army uses M4A1's instead of AK's.
