This was the greatest middleweight fight ever! Hagler came out smoking like a demon because of all the trash talk in the pre fight hype,Tommy said things like,what are you going to do to me!? im gonna knock your bold head all over the wall! To which Marvin replied, good! that means your gonna show up!your gonna come to the fight! Tommy was great and had a big heart! But when I have a look at Kessler-Calzaghe in nower days with 12 exiting Rounds on nearly even level I need to say I prefer that balanced style that brings you through 12 rounds. Benn v EubankI back in the 90ies was thrilling too. Man these guys are completely done after 1 round. Just my likes in boxing. I accept the 1st to 3rd round KO supporter too xD

Joe hadn't peaked yet, and had one more solid fight in him against Ali in Manilla one year later. Get the point? Every fighter is just one fight awayn from obscurity. I must say Jerry Quarry had some moves. If there ever was a great white hope in those days it was him. I haven't watched him fight in years and they were Ali fights. To revisit these Quarry fights shows me just how good he was. More than just tough!

you're all nuts if u believe George ducked anyone. He was mean as Godzilla and could punch REALLY hard. George was a Gold medal winner. In those days he ducked no one! Trust me. He was so mean. I was there. and also trust me on this, Frazier was also a gold winner and a true champ . Both Foreman and Frazier were true champions and both a cut above the cloth of Lyle and Shavers. Ronnie and Earnie were tough guys & big punchers etc. but these guys were true champions. Styles makes fights.

It was just because Foreman didn't want to have anything to do with Quarry. Quarry had roughed Foreman up during a sparring session early on in Foreman's career and ever since then Foreman dodged Quarry, purposely. When he saw what Quarry had done to Lyle and Shavers, Foreman knew that Quarry was still a very dangerous opponent.

Why, oh why, did Jerry's people take this fight? There was no need, surely. Jerry was busy taking on the young turks like Lyle and Shavers and he deserved a title shot against Foreman. There was nothing to gain by taking on Frazier again. It also makes no sense that Frazier (#2) was rated higher than JQ (#3). Jerry was coming off two big wins (Lyle, Shavers) whereas Frazier had lost two of his last three fights (Foreman, Ali). Styles makes fights and Frazier's style was too much for Jerry

Didn't get to see it at all here in Australia but Lcy looks awful slow these days.VERY top heavy{IE:Muscle bound}too which can only slow a fighter down and cause him to tire as the fight goes on.Honestly?Lacy should have owned this guy.EM has lost pretty convincingly if memory serves,to every decent fighter he has faced.More to it than a shitty 550k purse offer to fight JT me thinks.JL,I believe,knows he no longer has what it takes @ world level and is doing the sensible thing and getting out.

Marciano is not that great. He is overpraised by American white media. He was hurt alot in almost every fights. That is why at 32 he had to quit. if he foght another two or three years and faced with young speedy Floyd Patterson or hard punch of Liston. He was easily knocked down. However, I gave crdit for him for brave heart and good left hook but compared to Ali, how many rounds he can survive from much more intelligence and experience of Ali?

Regardless of opinions on how the fight would go, it was Tyson, not Foreman, who turned down the fight in 1991. Foreman was up for it, King was keen to make the fight, it would have been Tyson's biggest payday up to the point, but he wanted no part of Foreman. According to Bobby Goodman, King's matchmaker at the time, Tyson was terrified of Foreman.

yes, i have heard that 2 74GD and i can see the logic, if you compare frazier's demolition. it just seems illogical that prime tyson couldn't get past old foreman's jab. still a monster weapon but if a young tyson didn't slip that then it just doesn't make sense. past prime holmes and prime thomas had much quicker jabs and he got past those. slow to set, cross arm defence...i just don't c it?

i can't believe people were seriously discussing a tyson foreman match. say what u like about tyson, he had a cast iron chin and no problem slipping a lot quicker jabs than foreman's, and foreman is made for a lateral mover with a left hook and overhand right. foreman had an outstanding 2nd career but prime tyson would have ended it. it was the right move to avoid tyson.

Anyways, I like Hearns alot, though he probably came out worst in the round robin between him, Duran, Leaonard, and Hagler, simply because he destroyed Duran, stunned Hagler, and frustrated Leaonard for most of their fight, though he lost 2 of 3. He was always the X factor in this equation, solely because of that hard right hand and his willingness to use it. He made Hagler's chin the legend it grew to become.

iv seen the interviews where they claimed this aswell, but i dont believe any of it, i dont think the fight lasted long enough for the leg massage to be a factor, maybee if it was 8-10 rounds and they were exhausted then i would say maybe but i think hagler hurt him in the 2nd and he couldnt recover from it, you can see in round 2 and 3 that he is still throwing the right hand aswell

hearns had balls to fight hagler toe to toe, hearns went down swiging and i admire him for it. it's the way both fighters fought that made it a great fight no matter who won or lost and will always be rememberd for this fight, that's how legends are made. and let's not forget hearns was not knocked out, he got up before the count of ten that's how much heart hearns had.

Agreed. But if you watch the documentry behind this, emanuel Stewart went mad at Hearns as one of his entourage gave him a massage before the fight. This didnt help his footwork and he decided to go toe to toe. Hearns did break his hand on haglers head early on in the round, he just didnt want to talk about it straight after the fight coz he didnt want to take the victory away from hagler. Nevertheless both legends of the sport, this loss didnt discredit hearns being a ATG at all IMO

I believe that Frazier clearly proved his superiority over Quarry in this fight. Why? He took Quarry's BEST shots many times, and kept on Smokin'. He showed his superior conditioning by continuing to put the pressure on despite getting tagged by JQ over and over. Quarry tired faster than Frazier and that final big left hook nearly dropped him. The first fight has been debated on who was ahead when it was stopped on cuts. But here Smokin Joe left no doubts.

even so, theres been great fighters who cut easily. i think quarrys problem was that he got into slug fests too often, he could of out boxed alot more fighters then he did, at least in my opinion. you can see at points he starts to box frazier, then lets go and starts brawling with him. another thing, can anyone name someone from that era that would beat frazier other then maybe shavers? :)

dude, you make out like fighting foreman is a walk in the park. quarry was a great fighter and always came for a brawl, but fact is it would go much like the rematch with ali. foremans jab would be too much, hes overwhelming physical strength would keep him at bay with those shoves, while those wild uppercuts tore through hes defence :)

Like I said, there are explanations for those losses, because he was better than all three, but bad luck or not, the fact remains that he still managed to lose three of his biggest fights. Foreman was excellent at cutting down the ring, as was Frazier, and if he does that he forces Jerry to trade. In that situation imo there's only one winner.

Still a matter of styles. I will say, though, that it was Quarry's own fault that he fell asleep while taking a knee in the Chuvalo fight (a fight he was easily winning and close to stoppage because of Chuvalo's eye) and the Ellis fight, which he went into with a broken back; but the Norton fight was one that Jerry took on only 18 days' notice when he was a shot fighter, and he still staggered Norton.

Foreman usually KO'd guys before he had time to cut them. Like I said I don't recall him fighting many cut-prone opponents so the point is moot. Quarry was not hard to find, as Ali & Frazier discovered, and if Foreman can find you it's goodnight Vienna. Quarry lost to Ali & Frazier because they were bigger, better and stronger. Whatever the explanations, he also managed to lose to Chuvalo, Ellis and Norton. He was good, but not quite good enough and never as good as some of his admirers assert.

Again, who did Foreman cut? No one. Being powerful is not the same as being damaging. Ali and Frazier's punches caused damage and would cut. Foreman's punches were thumping--more powerful--but ponderous. If Quarry didn't get cut, he was as dangerous as any heavyweight in history. By the way, Foreman was a fan of Quarry's even in the late 1960s. Historical accounts reveal that very clearly. As a matter of styles, Quarry would have taken George to school.

Modern day Foreman is nice about everyone. What is he going to say? I think I'd have KO'd him in one round? Quarry doesn't have the strength or the power to keep Foreman off him, or Ali's ability to soak up punishment. In the past year Quarry had beaten Lyle and Shavers, but look how easily Frazier had him going. I don't believe Foreman fought any top class fighter who cut as easily as Quarry, so that point is moot. Foreman by early TKO, much like the Chuvalo fight.

Foreman ducked Quarry in a peaked Quarry in 1973 (the same year Jerry destroyed Ernie Shavers and beat the hell out of Ron Lyle.Foreman himself conceded that point. Quarry would have taken Foreman into the later rounds since no punches could hurt him and George's punches did not cut like Frazier's and Ali's (Jerry's biggest problem). Quarry's counter punching would have cut George in half after that. And George knows it too.

When did Foreman duck Quarry? Why would Foreman duck Quarry, who lost every title fight he was in and was slaughtered by Frazier and Ali twice? Only two guys who intimidated Foreman - Frazier and Liston, not Quarry. The winner of Quarry-Chuvalo was due to meet Foreman, but Quarry lost so Chuvalo fought him instead. The winner of the Frazier-Quarry rematch was due a shot at the winner of Foreman-Norton, and Quarry lost again.

One more thought about Quarry's losses against Jimmy Ellis and George Chuvalo. Though no one is to blame except Quarry himself for those losses, it is interesting to note that Jerry went into the Ellis fight (pushed by his father) with a broken back he incurred in a bar fight with brother Bobby, and against against Chuvalo, Jerry misread the referee's count, like he was thinking about his travel plans...

Freeflippo makes some good observations. But I still maintain that, as a matter of styles, Quarry would have stood one hell of a good shot at Foreman. Quarry at his best would have carried him into the later rounds and then his brilliant counter punching would have taken over George.

i think louis did a fair job on refing, he should of done something about the low blows, but he gave quarry a chance to show if he was able to fight back or not and stopped it. the left hook he hit him with was insane.. quarry was dead for 2 seconds, its amazing he was still standing and understable why frazier stepped back, would of killed any other fighter :)

although quarry would of given foreman all he could handle, when did they sparr? because you saw what tillis did to tyson in the amatures, and once they hit pro tyson destroyed him. also, foreman was terrified of frazier, and look what he did to him. finally, ron lyle was a big hitter and gave foreman all he could handle, was also stated by foreman as the hardest hitter he fought ever (including sparring with liston) :)
