God is the Ultimate Reality which underlies all existence. God is both nameless and formless but nevertheless Hinduism allows for a follower to worship God in any name or form(pluralism). Religion is seen as a pathway to God-realization which is the ultimate goal of life. One must lead a good life, worship God with faith, help others, practice yoga and be kind to all. If you want to read a basic begginer's guide, I would suggest reading Ed Viswanathans' books on Hinduism. These are intended for Hindu teens who were raised in the West. As such these books are very basic and teach all of the basic ideas of Hinduism. From there, I would move on to reading Klaus Klostermaier's Introduction to Hinduism - this is the standard textbook used in Religion 101 classes in American colleges. From there, it depends on what you want to lear more on and then specialize.

Karma in Hinduism = Action and its consequences. Karma comes from Sanskrit root 'kar' which means 'to do'. Hindus believe that one is accountable for one's actions both good and bad and that this Karma "attaches" to one's soul. Buddhists don't believe in a permanent soul ( anatma doctrine ) and therefore in Buddhism one's Karma is not "attached" to one's soul but is part of one's debt to "society". Buddhism is a lot more complicated than Hindu philosophy which accepts both God and a soul.

First off, you are asking questions - that is the first step. True religion in Hinduism starts with vichaar or enquiry. It would be hard to explain Hinduism in You Tube but in essence Hinduism is a name for the ancient and traditional religions practiced in India for more than 5000 years! The word 'hindu' itself is of Arabic origin ( the Arabs invaded India in 6th century AD and called the locals as 'hindus' ) and acutally refers to all Indians - not any specific religious group.

Well what is "real?" I personally don't think life is just some sort of scientific anomoly. I mean there has to be some greater consciousness, there has to be a Creator, obviously the Universe has to come from somewhere. And then there's like the whole idea of Karma. Where life is a "battle" so to speak of balances and imbalances. Like "ying-yang." Or good and evil. Someone was saying before that like God is what binds the Universe, it's in everything, but you can't see it and choosing to believe in God you will see the light, but those who do not will just be blinded by the veil of their own ignorance limited to their five senses. That's kind of my understanding of the philosophy of buddhism. Thanks, Mitch, some people don't understand because they're in too much of a hurry to listen to the finer details of one's discourse. I think i delude my self somewhat. Well... I guess we all do, LOTS, but i'm meaning specifically with regards to the question of free will. I cling to a belief in it and recognize rationally that i can't really justify the belief. As long as it's still a somewhat open question though, i'll believe that at some deep down level we are agents of our own free will. Hm? Except, of course when it comes to those who market reality spin, and those who sell me stuff i don't need, and... Manipulationists!

Always glad to see another blues harp enthusiast out there! Don't forget to put that thing in your mouth as much as you can to get a good seal. I can certainly agree that it's challenging to grasp the harp one handed, as I had to do so while my arm was slinged for quite a while following a car accident. I find the Special 20 grasps pretty well. Try to avoid Old Maid's mouth and put your lips around the harp and keep them supple if you can. Best of luck and keep up the good work!

It's because people imagine themselves in our position and then think, "oh, my life would be worthless if that were to happen to me", and they can't imagine that we can still enjoy life... It's as if they feel our lives aren't as worthy to be lived as theirs. We all have our crosses to bare, but that is no reason to stop living. Your life has worth, so does mine. I do not quite agree with:personal freedom. Its intellectul self-demolition. Sartre in so many words may have said so. But he does also have the ethical part to his philosophy. "Bad Faith". Most people think that project failed. I think there is something to it.(Check Being and Nothing). The world is Being. So where does nothing come from? All action is part of Being. So nothing is nothing. Where are we gong to find nothing (evil).

Philosophy and God. Should we be satisfied with: God exist. Or should we demand that God is Good. If God is Good even if He doesn't "exist" it will enter in our mind as an idea. That the mere thought that there can be an idea truly Good, should satisfiy us? God can be beyond our world. (Perhaps this is the Platonic way of understanding the eternal Ideas. I can not stop thinking that there is such a world of an Idea.)

is of importance. human morality is an individualistic affair when only one individual is involved and effected by his on moral actions, but in a community, morality has to be collective because it effects the whole community. i don't think religion provides the best morals, it is just a support system. since i don't yet know what can replace religion effectively i will leave it alone for some time. i did like Sartre, no Material Possessions concept/practice i agree with that.

i watched the jean paul Sartre videos, i feel as animals we have a limited purpose but as humans we are free to create our own meaning/purpose in life. humans and most animals for that matter are community based, they are interdependent on one another just as humans are. nature works because of interdependence, so i agree with you. but i do agree with Sartre about the meaning of life, it is what we choose it to be. as a Buddhist i feel consciousness or deep understanding,
