I would agree that Dennis was toying with Tony in this video. However, it should be stated that Tony has come a long way with his playing. At the age he's at now, he's laying down fat pockets. And on technical level, he's drastically more dynamic and interesting to listen to now. Tony would say that Dennis was the man to this day. Vinnie on the other hand is my favourite!!! :)

Your welcome. I haven't had enough hands-on with Ash wood to have an educated opinion. I've heard Yamaha Ash drums that sound very good. This much I know "like" woods can vary drastically. For instance, Birch from other regions (Off-Shore, European) can have very different characteristics than domestic (US) woods. DW birch vs Sonor Birch sound completely different. Bottom line, I'm not a woodologist. I would drop John Good a letter at DW... he's an expert. Just being honest with you.

I understand all "outside factors", but I always thought of wood as the foundation of the sound. Like I mentioned I played poplar wood drums, but a freind of mine had a birch kit (of the same brand, and that I would tune)...it always sounded so pure and recorded very well. I was just looking for your imput on maple drums and especially ash wood which is pretty rare. Thanks again and I hope you keep this up for all of our sake!

There are so many other factors beyond the type of wood that come into play, making the definition of sound difficult. My DW kits are maple (red flame) and birch (blue). The maple kit produces more sustain in the sml diameter drums and vice versa in the larger drums. Go figure? Heads, suspension systems & bearing edges impact tone. Sound is subjective... My philosophy is, if it sounds good to you, it's a good sound. . Audition and experimentation is my best suggestion.

Hey Bob, I've tried some of these ideas with good results. I have a question which I'm not sure where to post, but I feel this is a good spot. Anyway, I'm researching drum kits for purchase in the near future and I'm realizing wood selection is playing a huge part in my decision. I'm familiar with bugdet drum sets that use "select hardwood" and especially poplar wood. But what can I expect from Maple and Birch and even Ash wood drums. I'm sure this will help others as well. Your resonate heads should probably be swapped out as well. Those heads have A LOT to do with your tone, and could be the only issue your having.

Thanks Paiste. Best to view the entire "Tonal-Tuning" series on the channel. It's about training your ears to hear pitch and pitch relationships (intervals) from drums. It's a method that works. Take a look and let me know how it works out for you.

bob, first i wanna say that your awesome, but im young and my drumset is generic. and im having so much trouble tuning and finding a nice deep rich sound. i have evans clear g2 genera heads on the top and stock heads on the bottom. it makes me so mad that i cant find a sound that satisfies me. it usually is so bad i stop drumming for weeks bc i get so mad. im happy with my paiste cymbals, but i absolutely hate my drums. and right now i cant afford a new one. please help me

Pearl makes a rubber tip that acts like a shock absorber. Not sure if they sell it as a accessory but worth checking into. I believe legged floor toms that are properly cushioned resonate more than rim-type mounts. it's a weight thing. I have my large toms mounted but considering changing back to floor toms.

Bob, I've played a seventies Pearl kit of questionable quality for 14 years. Your video will help me get the most out of the Ludwig Legacy Classic set that's coming my way! The rack toms come with RIMS style mounts. The 14x14 and 16x16 floor toms are on plain old legs though. Should I try to get RIMS mounts for them? You said there are commercial products available that can isolate floor tom legs. Can you name any, because I'm not having much luck finding them?

That's an old late 70's maple Gretsch. Looser snare tension is another option especially for high impact performance. The tighter the snares, the "smaller" the sound. Loosening the snare and striking with much greater force creates a fuller tone. Just another sound option to consider.

is that a gretsch catalina birch floor tom you used? also, in one of your videos, you said to loosen your snares in order to get other tones, for a grungier sound. my problem with this is that it makes other drums ring. I'm looking for a snare that can have relatively thick sounding tones without having the other drums make the snares vibrate. Can you help me out? I had a 240 in the 70's. The new Z's are quieter, handle better, faster and the body doesn't rust out in 1 year! In fact I had an 03 and the jump to to the 06 displayed significant improvements in these departments. Wow! a car question on a Drum-Ed site!

Not "very" different, but no more than we experience on any traditional pedal design. "Matched" pedal motion is easy to achieve on the BOA due to controlling both spring tension and beater cam physics (gear ratio)

I'm sold, I have to get myself a double pedal! When the left pedal is adjusted to match the beater movement of the right pedal does the left pedal "feel" very different. I think I may like more resistance for my left foot but I still want the beaters to move the same like you showed us.

It's actually on the PDP portion of the site. The pedal plate is far more durable than traditional springs. Also, much more efficient and balance in regards to impulse (forward motion) and recuperation rates. Not to mention it's dead silent due to less moving parts and connections.

The Tama Rockstars are fine entry level drums. There are many others as well. Pearl, Gretsch, Pacific (DW), Ludwig make competitive products. Best to listen to them at a local dealer before a final choice.

That's verry close to what i want. I like my snare to have a little more POP to i though. I have a 3.5x13" piccolo snare by DW. I'm not sure what the heads are tuned to. I use it in my UTG Drum Cover video if you wanna hear it. I like how i have it now, but i want to love it, you know? haha

Another very inexpensive way to make your cymbals sizzle is to lay a beaded necklace on them. I keep a chain from a set of dogtags in my cymbal bag and I just put it on the cymbal as if the cymbal stand was a neck. I have also used light tape and taped the same chain inside the bottom hihat cymbal.

Yeah, I've seen danny using it with Tool. The retro screen is extreme innovation as it effects both feel and sound in a big way. The sound is truly retro (single headed BD sound) tons of attack, short sustain punchy. With the feel being very precise, "definite". I can understand how this works for Danny stylistically.

Made me laugh! If your into single ply heads, the new Evans G+'s produce an open sound with additional durability compared to 10 mil heads. If you like 2 ply heads, the EC-2 clears with the EC-reso is a killer combo. Always best to try both heads on one of your drums before investing into re-heading the kit. the 12" drum is good starting point

Basic truism but not that simple. Using "like" heads...ie; G1/G1, G2/G2 etc. will have a "specific" tuning spot producing abundant sustain But this combination makes the drum "Tuning Specific". If that special tuning works for you than your in!

If your referring to sustain, pick up a set of MinEMAD mufflers. If it's errant overtones, it's important to tune with extreme precision in small increments. Tap the center and move each key rod 1/4 turn up then below the original pitch until you find the culprit. It's usually a specific T-Rod that is causing the problem.

I purchased a Pacific 805 drumset about 6 months ago and I wanted to try out the evans heads out. ooo, don't want to mess with the most important drum on the kit. I suggest trying the Evans Powercenter-RD with the Hazy 300. This is a good all-around combo. Tune the snare side to an "A" than the batter to the same pitch and listen. Than tune the batter "up in 1/2 step increments" (Bb,B, C,C#) listen to the differences in sound at each setting. This technique should get you into the pocket.

Hi Bob, Thanks to this video I got a great sound from my toms by opting for EC2's and EC Reso's. Now my Pearl Masters Studio Birch snare sounds like crap!!! I watched your snare tuning vid but I just cant get the sound I want. I like batter fairly tight yet still want a deepish sound. Reso is a Remo ambassador weatherking. Hi bob i have enjoyed watching your videos. When i was younger and learning like 25 years ago, i used hydralic heads cos i thought they lasted longer but i could never make them sound nice. Generally, wrapped shells produce more low fundamental pitch. It's subtle but detectable, if you were to make a direct comparison (A>B test). For the most part the attraction to covered shells is in lower cost. But I know many drummers that go for the sound it produces as well. Your welcome. It's OK to purchase a few single heads to experiment. Like 12" G+, EC-2 and G-2. This way you spend a few dollar for a couple extra to make the right choice for the entire kit set-up. Right now I'm using 3 types of batters on my kit. My approach is to create a sound I like for each drum.

Every time I play my drums I constantly "tweaking" the tuning. Heads loosen up, stretch out so it's best to keep at it tuning wise. Also, being consistent at tuning helps to improve and embed tuning technique.

Hi Bob. I have a tom which is just over 1/8th of an inch out of round. Is this actually something that should qualify for a return etc? The drum is a mapex saturn and according to the american website the shells are covered by a limited lifetime warranty. I cannot find any information on warranty on the U.K site but would it be acceptable/normal practise to send it back for going out of round to this degree? Your DVD has been a great help with some tuning issues!

Thank you! General rule is the more snare wires the less drum tone and vice versa. Big differences between 20 strand to 14 or 16 strands. I like 16's Gotta Experiment! The Hazy 300 snare head combined with the ECS-RD is a winning choice. Also, the Powercenter-RD batter head is versatile.

The "A" pitch is way of describing the amount of resistance in the snare head. Generally, too loose or over- tensioning generally generates negative results in the way the head is extended into the snare wires. The safe tuning range is between G-C. A is the medial position regardless of batter tension and size of drum. Of course going for an "special" sound often negates general rules of tuning.

Hi John Paul. Well that's a toughie. Sort of like trying to turn a Volkswagon Beetle into a Corvette...2 completely different animals with the only connection being they both transport ya. The single ply head on the 10" is a good choice. You might want to try applying the Evans Min-Emad mufflers to "soften" the tone of the 10". In your situation it might work better by making the tone of the drums more alike.

bob- on your 2 snare drums, are the batter heads the EC2 series? i want a "V8" type bark outta my 5x14, it seems that the EC batter head would be a solid choice, but what would you say the best snare side head would be? and what are the snare heads you're using in this video? thanks again my man! Pick up a metronome with pitches on it. Try matching the "A" pitch to the snare head and "C" for the the batter side. This will get you into the ballpark, then try moving the batter head up & Down in pitch leaving the snare head set @ "A".

The Evans RGC or EQ pads are way better than a pillow. They are totally adjustable and stay in place when transporting your drums. Generally, it's best to tune each head to it's lowest possible pitch (LPP). Than experiment with raising the batter head until you find a sound that grabs you but more importantly the feel is what your after. Small incremental changes in tuning can really effect the sound & Feel. Even the drum is BIG, be delicate!

Lower tunings will generate more slap sound, good for definition in high volume settings. Also, a "rigid" protector patch will further define your sound. Bottom line is "large diameter drums are limited in tuning range" so taking my suggested tuning and lowering the batter head slightly may hit the spot for you.

Depends on whether you want to control the amount of pressure against the head. The gate system disengages the 'velocity" control in the standard EQ pad. So work on this tuning technique. Off the pillow/blanket muffling system and pick up 1 or 2 Evans EQ Pads. The EQ pad give you much more control over "sustain". which what you after. Also, be certain to use a Evans EQ-3 resonant head. Last but not least... try the EMAD 2/Emad reso system. It has a built in fat, thuddy tone.

Bob, HELP! I'm not gonna lie, i dont think i've used this technique, but i've tuned my bass drum many times over and over with different techniques. I have a two blankets and three pillows in that thing, and i dont get what i want from it! i've tuned my batter head low, and high, and the resonant low. i've tried sooo many combinations, but i still dont get the sound i want. i want one much like that; low pitched, thud. i use an eq4 batter head and a yamaha stock resonant head. help please!

Identical drums are rare. What your dealing with is slight variations in shell roundness, true bearing edges, etc. Also, heads are inconsistent."Flatness" in drum heads varies. Tuning the BD is about being aware of the sensitivity in drum key turns. Do you best to tune to the "lowest possible pitch" (LPP) Set the bass drum up and while tapping softly with your foot, turn the tension rod at the top of the drum back and forth... listen closely for the drum to resonate and bottom out. Accuracy in tuning bass drum has to do with very small incremental drum key turns (1/4). It's best to sit behind the drum and while tapping it with your foot jump around the t-rods making small incremental moves and listen for the best sound. There's always a "magic" t-rod that does the trick. Your mission is to find that magical key.

Please keep in mind sound is completely subjective. If I were making a selection based on these diameters I'd go with 10x7,12x8, 14x13 (or 14) and 16x14 (or 15). The 12"&14" diameters (12x8, 14x14) are standards that still work well for lo-end and tunability Hope this helps.

I have one kit set-up on the floor (traditional set-up) and the other on a "DrumFrame" The DF is an ergonomic mounting system that aligns the drummer and drums at the same tilted angle. The bass drum is suspended and set at the same angle as the kit. You can check it out at the DrumFrame site.

Nature of the material. Zinc to steel is like Lead to steel. Zinc is much softer which is why it is easy to die-cast. Sure, the deader hoop will not encourage head vibration. I'll be using a DW maple drum with die-cast on the snare side and flanged on the batter. This changed my feeling from liking this drum to loving it now.

Sounds great, and no doubt they will too! Sorry, I was asking if the two snare drums were DW bronze, rather than what the wires were. The difference between the hoops is interesting though - do you think it's the nature of zinc vs steel that stops the ring of diecast hoops, or the manufacture of the hoop which does that (the fact that it's cast)? I wonder if bronze or aluminium die-cast hoops would ring sympathetically like triple-flanged but with the focussed sound of flanged hoops..?

thnx again for the rack system help bob. another thing u cud do for more cymbal effects in ur drum kit is u can lower a crash cymbal so that is slightly touches ur hi hats wen there open. wen u hit both with a single hit or play beats on it, it sounds more open and echoey. or if u open the hi hat while playing beats it hits the cymbal and u can hear a soft, long decay.

Can't honestly say they are harder to tune. One thing about DW's is they do a great job in regards to shell roundness and flat bearing edges making tuning much more accurate than other mass produced drums. Small drum key moves are important. It's easy to go right by a good tuning if your not gentle with the key.
