Uhhh... this movie was a remake. This has been a Broadway play for some time, and has been a movie before. But you're right in saying that it's refreshing to take a break from the disgustingly sweet and overplayed (HSM fans, I'm talking to you) musicals that have become trademark to this time. And the beggar woman is supposed to be annoying. She's INSANE! All the same, the actress who played her did the best she could with what she was given. It was a great performance.

Finally, a good original musical written by recent authors...All the musicals that seem to come out these days are 1) cartoons, 2) remakes, or 3) annoying and poorly done. Sometimes even a combination. Another unique atribute of this movie...it was a tragedy...You don't find those much any more either...*sigh*...Hollywood has forgotten us...

My sister (and the rest of the theatre) was absolutely mortified at this part of the movie, but I was laughing so hard at the puns. The audience thought I was a madwoman. This musical is great... I ran the idea past our drama teacher at school as a possiblility for next year's musical. I'm giving him ideas to make it non-graphic (like the 1982 broadway version) and I think he might go for it. They all saw her as daft and even that level of humiliation and torment as a form of entertainment. Just a bit of symbolism to how low those people could get and how nobody did anything to help. Yes, but I love her character and Carter does a good job of making her look sympathetic then demonic. Every character in this movie has their own faults Except maybe Johanna, Anthony. Toby didn't do anything 'til he killed Sweeney, but that was really for everyone's own good.

If this did happen, it wouldn't just be without the singing. The entire Legend was rewritten by Christopher Bond and adapted into a Musical by Stephen Sondheim. I haven't read it either so I can't say, but I've researched enough to know that Sweeney Todd is not an historical character and that the novel is merely fiction. I find it funny that people wish that a mass murder took place only because they enjoyed the movie - seems so sinister to me. :P

I don't really think that would work. =\ The main featured characters are gone, and thus, their story sadly ends. Whatever happens to Anthony, Johanna, and even Toby no longer matter in the storyline of Sweeney Todd as they cannot alter the ultimate fates of the Title role and His Accomplice. Even though quite a few people are curious about Anthony and Johanna, (some people just can't help it, and that's okay,) they no longer matter to the plot.
