it does look interesting. but about a year ago i read wat a train oporator typed and he said that he is on call 24-7. i say train oporator because 'engineer' has a double meaning i guess: someone who disighns things, and a train opporator. but, if u say that 'engineers' arent on call 24-7, and if u are an engineer, then i would have to agree with u :)unless if 'on call' means that u might be called to go to work anytime

If you mean 'engineer', then what you are saying is totally untrue. You are subject to strict hours of service regulations which absolutely do not permit anything close to 24 x 7. If you are talking about management who are not responsible for actually moving the trains, you are a bit closer to being correct. However, it is a fascinating job. I've been doing it since college and I love it.

He has a guy on the ground telling him what to do and how much to each crossing. Dont listen to "OMGLOOKihavenoname" you start off about about $10 and hour and after a few years get up to $35-$40 an hour. As for being on call you work for 8-12 hours then get to go on rest for a day. I would say to work for a shortline railway if you have a family. You would be home for dinner and the work easyier. If you work for a main line you stay where ever your time runs out for weeks on end.

I was being cynical. Sorry. I work for the railroad. In almost all cases the railcars are eventually either rerailed. In particular with minor wrecks like this one. They can use cranes or sidebooms for larger derailments. For minor ones you can actually ramp them back up with wood blocks or steel rerailers.

The plow looks like it was mounted on an old Vanderbilt tender from the steam days. It was going too fast for me to tell for sure. If I'm not mistaken they filled the water tank with cement for ballast.

It seems a railroad observation truck must accompany these plows. If that is so how the heck to they plow the thousands of miles of rail line in the US. You can't always have a truck ground crew spotting

I dont think fhe engineer or crew can see much. I worked 28 years on a railroad, in many snowstorms. When we hit snowdrifts on tracks we had whiteout conditions and we had to stop. Hitting something or someone you "didnt see" was a bad thing.
