This is no different than what a piano player does. The only reason why it's celebrated is because only a very select few can do it on guitar. And stanley is the only one i have heard do it well for jazz i mean. But he is a great musican and has some nice lines in his playing. No doubt about that.

With the first reason, tell me about it. Case in point: Scott Joplin. His rag pieces were meant to be played at a respectable pace to emphasize the melody. However many Jazz and Classical artists often speed them up just to showcase their talent. This even happened in Joplin's lifetime, and he often expressed his hatred for it. It's mature performers that seek to interpret what the piece is trying to convey, instead of mining it for opportunities to show off their technique.

I've always admired and respected Ginger Baker as an influential drummer in the Rock world helping to bring drums to the foreground along with artists like John Bonham and Keith Moon. I think he has grown musically since the Cream years (and I was a big fan of Cream), but there is a far more intelligent musician behind the kit now. He is allowing his jazz roots to surface more. Check out his jazz CD "Falling off the Roof", it's good stuff. Keep rockin' Ginger!

Some 20 yrs later than you I was taught out of the same book, along w/ Chapin, Bellson, Reid, Stone, Igoe etc. Do you remember when Stanley Spector was telling everybody to ditch all of that and follow his method? I'm curious to find out how that turned out. I never met anyone who said they went thru that so I don't know. Of course the rudiments were never an 'artificial' system but a natural progression of what to do with a drum, single stroke to flam to drag etc. and endless ways to play them.

When I started playing drums in 1956, my instructor had me use the Buddy Rich instructional book. A majority of the drills and "songs" dealt heavily with the 26rudiments. If you listen carefully, you can hear most of them in his solos. What made Buddy so great was the speed and crispness he could play. He had the natural ability to physically play faster than most.

I'd also firmly recomment you to get Jojo's "Secret Weapons for the Modern drummer" DvD as it is, no doubt, the most impressive display of technical mastery I've ever seen from any modern day drummer. The speed he can get with accented moeller strokes and how clean they sound is otherworldly. I'm really struggling to get somewhere near that guy's skills. I'd guess only Buddy could give him a run for his money. Maybe no one else at the moment. I don't think so.

I understand. That was clearly my own personal impression, but not everything about it is bad. Thanks to the almost crystal-clear remastering, his strokes became a lot deeper once you plug the DvD into a dolby system or something. Its amazing how great this solo can sound using a good pair of stereos.

Watching this video on DVD actually makes him faster in some parts, as, at half or quarter, etc., speed you see just how much of his work is one handed rolls. Much more than you might think. I actually watched this solo on DVD before I put Thea to bed tonight -- at full speed only -- and didn't notice any difference in speed. But I'll have to check it out sometime when I'm not babysitting, I suppose.

That would make things clearer (literally speaking). Doubts would dissapear. Whenever I watch his "Buddy Rich on why he doesn't use matched grip" video, I come out of it really impressed by the complexy, strength and speed of those notes. I'd say that Buddy could play faster than anyone, but he did not do it THAT often. Sometimes he was more complex than totally fast (this video is an example, maybe). This video is an unbelievably diverse textures composition.

Yeah. I just wanted to say that I'm the last guy on Earth to EVER want to say a bad thing about Buddy Rich, BUT, my main concern will always be the truth. Even if its ugly and undesirable, my main commitment is always with "her". This solo is still incredible, and it is considerably fast.The fact that he could think and play soo smoothly and non stop on the spot is astonishing for itself. I'd love to see other videos of him being transported into a DvD release.

This is probably just me putting my own environmental perspective on the song, but I interpreted it as having a bit of a culturally relative slant; not shopping, traveling by foot, and recognizing the power of your own body and self is a green way to live. Her "opponent," who can only go fast and won't change, to me represents those who stick to the draining consumerist lifestyle that is the norm in the U.S. According to wikipedia, ecology does seem to be Fiona's thing.

why do people always have to draw comparisons? by the way, these "complex" rhythms you speak of are nothing more than 4/4 with clever syncopation etc. many of these "metalheads" you refer to use ridiculously complex meter/tempo changes with incredible syncopation.. take the band meshuggah for example. but i say again, why even bother comparing, there is good blues/jazz and there is good metal.

He's playing arpeggios with legato/tapping, love that song btw, thanks for posting! :) I don't think he beats the shit out of all those metal players who sweep pick btw. It's different techniques. I would agree that this is more complicated technical and also melodically. It's incredible how much emotion he puts in it, even when playing like this. Remarkable guitarist, very very talented and very very VERY good!

I agree; Jordan plays the song, and through the song and with the song, and improvises on themes and does this without directing too much attention to his immense technical prowess. He simply uses his skill to bring you into his love for whatever he's playing. He's not saying, "Watch me tapping, watch me tapping!" Chapman stylists (a lot of 'em) and accoustic tap-bangers tend to be a bit repetitive...imo...

Chapman and Jordan's playing really do bear little resemblance -- they both tap, but Chapman's style is more geared toward repetition and the sort of whack-whack-slap rhythms that Stick players have come to be known for. Compared to Jordan, his playing is simplistic.

Remember that with this style he is maintaining more than one flow of music at the same time. The left hand has a different job than the right. You appreciate the level of difficulty of the right hand but the left is doing no less to contribute to the experience. One hand has to maintain the rhythm/bass sounds that accompany the leads provided by the other. I suspect if he weren't so busy doing what no other human being can do he'd be happy to demonstrate far more ability with that left hand.

The whole band was amazing. I think Buddy's best group ever. Especially with Dave Stahl Nailing everything to the wall. That double B at the end gives me unbelievable chills with how easy he does it. It's no wonder he was quoted as Buddy's Favorite lead. If you have the chance to hear the beggining of this chart with a couple diferent guys on lead, and compare them to Dave, there's no comparison. Wow is all i have to say for this entire band!
