Not a strap, but something else is holding up the guitar. Look closely at the end, he lets go briefly at one point, and has to 'raise' it off something before he lowers it to his waist.

Segovia does not get angry over the fingering. He is upset over the way he plays the chords, the ring of notes, the tempo, and so forth. He is showing Chapdelaine to focus on the detail and worth of every note. Chapdelaine says we would not have learned anything if master didn't "break him down" to listen even harder, push that much further for perfection.

It is an intersting criticizm, yet one that I have heard and made before in the same or different terminology. I think though what Segovia is implying is that Chapdelaine is not meeting certain expressive expectations that are capeable on the guitar such as the portamento, vibrato, and tone colors; not all of which can be obtained by other instruments. Therefore, since the guitar is capeable of all such expressions, not utilizing them makes the music dry in comparrison to its potential.

Why Segovia says: guitar is not a dry instrument. I cannot think on a dry instrument... Piano or flute are not dry instruments regardles the fact they can not play a portamento. Very humble man. If it'd been me, my temper would've snapped and I'd've broken my instrument on his head and stormed out. I agree. Lots of guitarists coming out today sound very dry and their playing lacks character. Technically, they are very good but they don't seem to have the sensitivity you find in the older masters. Probably has to do with their being closer to the romantic school. You see the same thing in violin. Nobody plays like Heifetz anymore.

He may've brought the guitar to heights heretofore unknown but I wouldn't say he was the father of the instrument. Too many great ones came before him for that, Sanz, Murcia, Sor, Giuliani, Carulli, Tárrega, & Llobet to name a few players/composers. He would absolutely not've been able to do any of his concertizing w/o the work of Antonio De Torres called father of the modern classical guitar. He was a giant standing on the shoulders of other giants. I agree w/ your age comment though.

He was of my great-grandfather's generation. Every old man I ever knew from that generation was erassible, ballsy and very set in their opinions. Segovia had a firm idea of what he wanted to hear and demanded it of those he taught. What some call narrow-minded, I call specialized. He never branched out. Segovia did not invent the guitar and music. I know as much about him as anyone having studied him and his music for 30 years. Hell, I even have 78s of him. But a teacher has to respect a student even in their differences. We are not clones. In the field of music Chapdelaine surpassed Segovia in ability. Segovia got stuck as an artist, great at what he could do but not nearly as versatile as Chapdelaine. And; I am old... and I treat students, esp. those who work hard, better than this.

Segovia was a great Classical player but Chapdelaine was not only able to play Classical but later (on YouTube) he plays all sorts of styles. So, IMO he surpassed Segovia as a musician in the larger sense. Segovia was VERY narrow minded. Segovia was also very abrupt and rude to a friend of mine who came to him in respect. In my book he was a Primadonna. I certainly respect his work but he could be nasty to students.

Being a teacher, student and performer myself, I understand that they're two completely different worlds that can sometimes meet. Yes, but is not like is a bad thing, not everyone has the skills to teach what they have learned. I think Francisco Tarrega did have that, he was loving and kind, one time told his student not to be taking notes to play a song, that not even him knew how he would play the piece. That shows a humble heart that play to make others happy and from the heart.

Segovia was a very arrogant person. MC reached his hand at the end of this video and he ignored it. AS also said that the electric guitar was an awful instrument. That says pretty much about him. I know that AS was the one who brought the classical guitar where it is now but at the same time I'm glad he's someone from the past. That's the good thing about YouTube, people can see how "legendary" people like Segovia really were. An asshole, in my opinion.

Its Alexander Tansman's Preludio from Cavatina. The first one is Scherzino form the same Cavatina. This suites called Cavatina won the first prize in International Cpompetition for guitar in Shiena in 1951, and was dedicated to Andres Segovia.

Yeah....years of classical training....but ther are MANY players with a lifetime of classical playing who do not delve into arranging pop tunes. MC is a very creative person who seems to know what he likes and is not afraid to stick to his guns. Even if it means offending Segovia! Edgar Crus is another top notch classical guitarist who comesup with some outrageous versions of Queen, Areosmith Led Zep... WE are lucky to have these people doing thie thing! Rob

ooops...sent that before I meant to.... so much for spelling, spacing and punctuation. The interesting thing about what he does is it is not so technically tough as in a MArtin Taylor or Tuck walking bass line thing, but the way he gives each voice (bass, melody, accomp) it's own unique sound so it really sounds like you are listening to a few instruments, versus one trying to sound like a few instruments. And that is due to training, ear, finesse and dedication. Great stuff! Rob

Yeah, Michael is one of the absolute players out there for sure. I caanot imagine the limits of his playing with all htose years of classical behind him. I had the great pleasure of taking classes with him last month at Swan Gathering. His arrangining class was by far the highlight of my week, and one of the best classes I have ever taken in 10 yrs at SG. VEry smart and funny straight forward guy, with a great gift for explaining his mind set w/o going into note for note teaching style

It's not easy at all. A good piece that could open you up to this song is Classical Gas. Mastering that will get you basically half way through this song as far as the different tempos go
