you are correct about the sale price being 100,000.00, however you must consider that What Tesla has built is a bunch of hand made custom sports cars, where as GM is planing a production car. I think that would easily explain the difference in cost. I also agree w/ you on the Unions, each empl. prob cost over 100.00 per hr., but when you factor it all in, says to me POOR management, after all they are directly responsible for all of the decisions that created their present circumstances.

Tesla did build the vehicle you speak of--but the sale price is expected to exceed $100,000. And the fact is that the Volt, when used with 4 gallons of gas(or Ethanol) gets a 200+ mile range. Let's face the facts that GM's employee cost averages $70 per worker vs Toyota's $40 per worker. The problem is not with management but overpaid union workers. I think they should bankrupt to reorganize, but note their tech advances in the meantime.

I don't think that this car was meant to "save" GM. But it does show that not only Toyota and Honda have the key to the next generation of technology. Only 3 years ago Honda said that plugins were at least 10 years out and that they would not pursue this technology. Now they say 2-3 years. A little healthy competition will benefit us all.

You people all need to quit your bitching. Seriously. It's not the BEST solution, but I give GM kudos (i'm an import guy) for trying. You keep your complaining and how much of an incentive do you think automakers have to design better (fully electric) cars in the future? The platform makes sense because it extends its range with a small gasoline engine. The car is still driven via electric motors. This allows them to bypass the issues with current battery technologies, including the cost issue.

Spy shots of the 2010 Mustang suggests that it is smaller. This means it could be lighter. Ford says that they will bring the SVO badge back with a 300hp "eco boosted" 4 cylinder engine. Lighter body and lighter engine would improve the corner performance. Lets hope that Ford employs a wishbone or multi-link suspension at all for points. I got a good look at a rear spy shot at autoblog and it does not look like a straight axle. Looks like Clarkson's bitching has paid off. I got goose bumps.

SplittingSkulls, I kinda agree. Let the big three suffer the storm. We bailed out the banks, and now they don't loan money. Did the same for AIG and they threw two monster parties. I don't think the financial crisis will kill the big three though. It will force them to get lean and mean to survive. Although GM may have to sell off it's medical insurance division to do it. I hate SUV's, but have admit they are great platforms for hybrids, they have good space for engine, motors and batteries.

Exactly, my 2001 Acura TL - dead tranny at 61,000 miles. My 2003 Honda Accord, currently in the shop with a dead tranny at 71,000 (my extended warranty saved me on this one). I have a Chevy Malibu rental - a really nice car! I actually like it better than the new Honda I test drove recently. GM has a home run with this car if it holds up. I have a 2006 GM Saab 9-3 for the other car, no problems, 25,000 miles so this could be a good thing.

I am driving a 2008 Rental right now for my Honda Accord in the shop for a replacement transmission (failed at 70,000 miles). I have to say, this car is quieter than my V6 Honda Accord, rides better, and handles almost the same. The gas mileage in the Chevy is the same as in the Honda (the rental is a V6) on the same drive I make from NJ to PA twice a week (mix of city and highway). The Honda gets 24.1 mpg regualarly, this gets 25.1. I will definately consider this product to replace the Honda.

Looks really nice. Definately competitive with the Accord and Camry. But we're going to have to see how well it holds up over the long term (not that the Japanese are impeccable in that respect; the auto trannies of last generation Accord V6's sucked, dont know about the latest gen Accords though).

2009 hybrid goes to 34 mpg, but 6 speed 4cyls. have been reported at 40mpg. Just shows that Hybrids are not necessarily worth the cost. GM should tout this fact that consumers save thousands of dollars and still get great MPG.

I have to say the design of this car is really nice. Its really nice. I would buy one. However look is only half of the battle. Lets just wait and see how it will do. If the quality can hold up, then i would say american cars are back in the game with toyota and honda. But thats just for the small car. I now still prefer japanese cars cause they last better. but 5 years from now and we still reveice good response from the people, that would be it. American come back.

It doesn't bother me whether a car firm is British owned or not - what matters is where they're designed, engineered and manufactured. Aston was in Ford's hands for a while too and they built the DB7 which was the most successful Aston for years (all that Ford marketing cash), now the DB9 and the DBS are back on top of the GT and sports supercar pile. I still have my first new car. A 67 Camaro RS/SS. It's on it's third engine. The first one cracked the block by where the starter bolts on at 7,500 ,iles. The second engine was replaced free of charge (290hp) small block. That engine gave me 95,000 miles of hard driving. I had it completely rebuilt and massaged a little. Not true. UAWs loose their jobs because they have to make the product provided to them. It's the management, engineers and designers who sit in their comfy offices who loose manufacturing jobs by coming up with second-rate products to make. Unfortunately, it's the hard-working UAWs workers who feel the brunt of poor managerial decisions. America has the best manufacturing workforce there is.

I do understand...it's called "reverse engineering." It's a process where a vehicle is dismantled and all the parts are categorized and meticulously studied as to their tolerances, assembly technique, chemical properties, manufacturing process, etc. I can tell that you are fairly uneducated so I'll help you out. Ford SUCKS! They throw a lot of fake chrome on it to make it look stylish. The Fusion's V6 is pathetic (0-60 in 8.5 seconds!). Even a baseline Civic could beat that. As for the Malibu, its better than the Ford, but still behind Accord and Camry in almost every aspect from power to fuel efficiency. The 4-cyl Malibu STILL uses a 4-spd tranny!!! Both Camry and Accord have moved up to 5-spds for the last two generations.
