Jeff Buckley's version lacks emotion ??? WTF that song is full of emotion as is the rest of the album - this is crap by comparison - only came to listen to it as ppl said it was a good version but it's not this guy can barely sing, and he certainly has no emotion. I actually disagree with some below posters. Don't get me wrong, I like jeff buckley and his version of this song but I really think it lacks emotion, simply because he tries so hard. Cohen may not be the most tuneful but you can't denie his song writing abilities and this is well performed. John Cale all the way for the best version though IMO.

Like this song and love the album it's on, but one that has always bugged me is that I wish it could have been recorded in another decade than the 80s. It has a little too much "early snyth" in it and the girls-only bridge is just distracting to the overall tone of the tune. Love Leonard Cohen though.

A simple and repetitive melody can be very beautiful (as it is here). That it is simple or repetitive is in itself no objection. Well, to his modest credit, Leonard always said that he only had one guitar trick, and he demonstrated it by playing "Avalanche", (which you can also find on here). Same repetetive-triplets "trick" he's using here. It's wonderful, as his guitar playing always is.

In my opinion this demonstrates why people can never manage good Cohen covers: It's in the man's voice. If you look objectively at this song the melody is incredibly simple and repetitive. There's nothing homosexual or drug related in this song, it's quite obviously just a straight forward story of the conflict between two very different brothers. The storyteller is a straight-laced, blue collar man, who has a wealthy brother that first courts his brother's wife with the luxury his life allows him, and then after the required discovery and disconnect, becomes involved in Scientology, which is entirely about the process of going clear (removing your thetans) so yeah.
