I wouldn't neccessarily call this song a country song. Its more of a Folk song. But there is a lot of good Country/Folk music out there. I am a huge Punk fan, but through me some John Denver, Peter Paul and Mary or Kingston Trio and see me smile. Check some of them out. You might be surprised, you might like more of it! This song reminds me of being a kid, on a Sunday night hanging out at home with my mom. She'd get out her guitar and play all night. We made a tape of us singing this song, Silver Threads and Golden Needles, and a few others. When my aunt and cousin would come visit we all got in on it. We didn't sound half bad if I do say so myself. Need to see if I can dig up those cassettes. Thanks for posting. Good memories. Great song!

For all of you who think this is a good country song you are wrong, John Denver was a folk singer not a country western star, this is one of the best folk songs ever written, of coarse I am a little bias since I'm from West Virginia. Yes, it's understood that he did kill Moss' wife. He checks his shoes when he exits the house, which is a nod to ealier in the film when he puts his feet on the desk to avoid getting blood on them. Thus, he was probably checking them to see if he got any of her blood on his shoes. The Coen brothers tend not to spell everything out, thankfully! It makes their films far more provoking and interesting.

I'm gonna assume you're not just trolling and point out that the idea behind 'Big Country' - as I remember it - was a response to those early '80s bands bleating about heroin, violence etc, or alternatively just 'dancing all night'. Disillusioment with both the self-detructive aspects of punk and the hedonism of New Romanticism. A throwback to 'old school' concepts of inspiration, idealism, courage etc, with a post-punk guitar-driven sound. That's it as I see it - I ain't Greil Marcus.

I dont think there will ever be another Dylan. He was more than just a great singer/songwriter and a musical revolutionary.....he lived at a time when he could bridge the worlds of Woody Guthrie and the present age. I would suggest checking out Michael Nau and his bands.....Bright Eyes....and maybe Two Gallants to see a bit of Dylan in the current age. They arent the man, but they have a bit of his spirit and style.

I agree Elliott Smith wasn't as prolific with his lyrics, but his musical ability as far as guitar playing, Drums , Piano was tremendous. Check out his song everything means nothing to me , I never heard someone play the drums and make you feel it in your soul like that. Bob Dylan's early songs were just completely mind blowing how such a young man could come up with all those great songs. He even admitted himself in a 60 minutes that he doesn't know how he came up with those early songs.

he may not technically be a great singer, but he sings from his heart/soul and that why he is effective at touching people in a profound way along with his second to none songwriting ability. Just a heads up to any Bob Dylan fans who enjoy great songwriters I would recommend MR Elliott Smith. His song content is a bit darker then Bob Dylan, but he is also a tremendous songwriter.
