That's a historical fallacy. Google the phrase "The Hiroshima Myth". Basically, in May '45, Japanese diplomats conveyed to the Americans that their insistence on unconditional surrender was the only obstacle in the way of peace. They were sick of a war they knew they could not win, and would surrender if they were allowed to keep their Emperor and their constitution to avoid civil meltdown. Truman knew this, and could have ended it peacefully. He dropped the bomb for reasons of political power.

i for one think america did the right thing in the bombing of japan, it was the minimal they could have done. japan or germany would have simply dropped all their bombs on the usa given the chance and just killed everyone. the hiroshima and nagasaki bombs ended suffering for thousands of american and european troops.

While Hiroshima and Nagasaki slaughtered thousands of civilians... look at the Japanese Empire in 1940s, who used POWs tied to stakes to test the fragmentation of their new weapons... they certainly would have bombed us with the nuke tenfold if they had it... and the Nazis had plans to nuke NYC way before 1945... That's not necessarily an indictment of Japan or Germany today.. war isn't fair and it isn't civilized.
