Unfortunately I saw the "American" ending, and I hated it - it was recently that I saw the orignal version, with Serra's original score - It's a totally different experience - why do distributors and producers believe they have to 'dumb' down a beautifle movie for the audience? The original ending, where he swims off into the darkness, is BEAUTIFLE! Not to mention Serra's great (somewhat dated)score,compared to Conti's AWFUL music! I feel fortunate that the European version and ending is the only one I`d viewed until 5 minutes ago. I just checked out the U.S. ending and felt that it was an insult to the obvious artistic sense Americans do have. The overdone somewhat corny sentimentality of the "happy" ending took something away from the whole feeling of the original version.

The real Jacques Mayol, although live at the time tis movie was filmed (acctualy he was at the set giving ideas how to film it), killed himself six years ago. It is therefore only logical that the main character in this movie should kill himself at the end, couse that's how the real Mayol went. Only the real Mayol hung himself. I thought it was tragic, because if he needed to go, he should've done it like it was done in the movie. Obviously that's the way he wanted to go years before.

Jacques probably died in the end sadly! when he go down he say to hes girlfriend " I have to go and see" probably he wanted to go down and see if it whas dolphins down there where hes best friend died. the end ends with Jacques swim away with the dolphins in the deep dark ocean. and the words Dedicated to my daughter Mitchell. Jacques means that the movie whas dedicated for her beacuse its whas hes daughter hes girlfriend whas pregnant.

en fait je pense que c'est un montage car lorsque l'on regarde bien la scene on remarque que c'est la meme scene que celle du film lorsque jacques va nager avec les dauphins.puis la musiques originale n'est nullement composée par bill conti mais par le compositeur fétiche de luc besson ,car je ne voit pas pour qu'elle raison il y aurai une telle distorsion entre la version diffusée au usa et celle diffusée en france ,pour moi ce n'est pas une vraie fin mais un montage

actually the armor is there to protect you from the blows. dont listen to jacolives, its impossible to get cuts from a shinai. the blows from kendo to the wrist, head and chest are powerful, even with armor they hurt. without armor, a cut to the head from a strong firm blow could easily bust your skull open. or blows to the body could easily crack ribs without the armor etc.
