I've seen a couple of his videos so far and it looks like he's asking for it. I mean, look at him. He's crouching before the fearsome-looking snake, dragging it by its tail. No wonder the snake gets all freaked out, ready to strike back: P I saw a clip how he actually got bitten by a wild old cobra. i see what i missed- the chords on this transcription for the head are written for a piano or some other chordal instrument, and once the solo starts it switches to be notated for saxophone, which is written a whole step above other instruments like guitar bass and piano. That accounts for the chords being moved up a half step but still sounding the same. The solo does often fit into the chords, thats part of why its amazing:it is still musical, you can still "hear him", despite its complexity.

I hear what your saying the progression is not to compicated, in the end the solo drives the tune. You can transcribe the solo and most of the solo will not fit within the changes and you would fail music theory 101. This reminds of the movie "White Man Can't Jump" there is a scene when Wesley Snipes and Woody Harelson are listening to Jimi Hendrix in the car. McCoy is without a doubt a master. All the high-density chords, fast runs and loudness here could annoy some. But McCoy is much more than this. Anyone who's heard his solo playing, esp. the Revelations CD (e.g.. "You Taught My Heart To Sing") knows how exquisitely beautiful he can also be.

That true, but it should also be noted that without technicality there is no music either. Many non-musicians have a very romanticised view of the way music is created and they don't realised that the greatest part of it is the result of hundreds upon hundreds of hours of practice. Music is an art form but for the most part all art forms consist of acquired knowledge and technique that is then applied in order to create emotion.

The video stopped partial way and recorded again after the mantis died so you dont really know wat the eff happened. artistic statement? please.. it's just a couple of nerds who happen to like coltrane, built a machine. the robot is cool. no question. though, you said it sounds great, i disagreed, you said it has really good time, just not in jazz, i say that this robot is trying to mimic jazz, so he only pulled off part of it, the notes. i claim it's a very small part. i don't care for free jazz, or john cage. though yes, it is music, and some people enjoy it. i happen to not be one of those people.

no- THIS is a robot noodling. When Ornette hit the scene a lot of people said this is SO jive. Reasons - no sound, no time. Then you ask yourself is free jazz legit? Or think John Cage? Is 4'33 even music? You can't deny that a robot playing Giant Steps is at least an artistic statement. So IS it jazz? Maybe not - maybe it's not supposed to be. With that said... I'd rather not listen to this again.

I don't take offence to a thumbs down. I'm glad that somebody knew enough to thumbs down it. But you can't tell me what I SHOULD think. It has a sound. I would personally work on it if I sounded like that, but some poeple would aim for that sound. And it has really good time, just not in a jazz sence. And well ok - it has no feel. Depends on how you look at it.
