Thanks for the vid, love it!! LOL, I think Melvin Lee Davis is seated because he's something like 7 feet tall, while Ritenour is around 5'7. Love Davis' bass sound, it's like a tribute to Marcus Miller, although I can't tell if the bass is a Fender or something else. And lastly, is that Terri Lyne Carrington on the drums? Five stars!!

GEEantonelli you cannot say a player is smooth jazz just because they use a mouthpiece to give themself a more contempory bright sound, listen to his phrasing and you will see how serious this guy is, if he had a more vintage tone you would be going on about how great he is, therefore you are not truly looking at his playing.

dude, this and chick corea's band are two completely different things - there's a pretty clear different between funk/fusion and (hardcore..)jazz. And yeah, it's primarily the pentatonic blues scale, but they use minor scale/chromatic scales aswell (: I disagree with you - u are listening to this thing as a jazz piece - Don't (: And what's left of whatever ur listenin to is great! :P

I think jazz has taken on a different meaning. Now it's a more general term for all improvised music. and I disagree with the Smooth/Bebop comparison. I also don't think we should label music. As soon as you put a name on something, you put it in a box, you target a specific crowd, and a lot of people don't give it a chance, especially if it's called "Jazz." Anyway, the different kinds of "Jazz" aren't comparable. It's too vast a genre. It's evolving, but they're all coexisting.

Sure all this players are amazing(saxophonist myself) but IMO the drummer is simply AMAZING. by the way,Eric's Modern sax explains quite a few of vary marienthal-ish style,approaches/chops. Check it out if you have the chance. the new guy on CCs electric band is Steve Wilson a true bebop/jazz player whereas marienthal's first music choice is this type of smooth-funk-fusion.You can tell. I think you miss the point. Some musicians need to work and make money and therefore work these type of "Smooth Jazz". Since the general public is not being educated about Jazz the only thing they can understand is this sort of elevator music. Some of it is relaxing, but not worth thinking in terms of heart and soul and trying to be artistic just sell records and somehow make a living. I saw Eric live in New York with Chick Corea's group. This guy is just amazing, some monster chops, no doubt!

Smooth jazz is okay as long as it's not Kenny G! Eric is still a good saxophone player despite playing more commercial music. David Sanborn, Grover Washington Jr., Tom Scott, just to name a few are well known for playing smooth jazz, but we know they're still monsters. Same with Eric!

He´s not tryin´to get to some peak. He is there and it is felt from his play. He reminds me spontaneity of Mitch Mitchell. Next to him Bonham played some leart stuffs but Mitchell was reacting to particular situations and he really figured out. Same is with Gary. It´s real transcendence

It´s not about any words. When i saw him for a first time I really knew IT is real understand of music, he really understood and touched real swing in every situation. He´s totally far behind of all the drummers, improved Colaiuta´s breakin´style to real looseness and pure naturality played by whole body. I knew before Dave´s technique from back to basics, but when I´ve seen this i was totally surprised his enourmous looseness.

please stop embarassing yourelf, especially with a name like yours, LOL just so you know, it definitely IS gary novak playing on "paint the world", period. how anybody with a healthy set of ears could be unable to distinct between novak and weckl playing is beyond me. i saw that band/tour live and didn't know about him (novak) then. i was pretty young and little did i know that i was witnessing one of the masters of the instrument at work .-)

no it isn't. you can tell my the feel of the songs. They are aproached completely different. The feel on the record is alot more fluid and relaxed and Novak is very very tight and technical. Plus I have the CD and it says Chick Corea, John Pattituci, DAVE WECKL, Frank Gambale, and Eric Marienthal. look it up. if you can prove to me otherwise I'll shut up. lol google that shit bro

Dave Koz just has a normal sound. I know what you mean. I have a sound almost as bright as his but have you seen his show?? he plays his alto with out a mic and holy shit. so sharp and really bad tone quality. I'm just saying his sound is computer generated

There is nothing really fantastic about Koz's alto sound, I am not sure what makes you think it is not real. I heard people with very similar tone in real life and have no problem believing his one is real too.

Well, no, I listen to him, but he doesn't happen to be my favorite. It's just that I hear an awful lot about these wonderful "mic" systems that supposedly make your tone wonderful, and would like to know more. Where can I get one? How do I know they work. If there is a magical mic which can make my tone good enough to make money at playing, I would gladly sacrifice my honor to get a start.

from what I heard from Tevet Sela, he needs to work on his lower range because they're not clear and it tries to jump up an octave everytime he plays them. Also, his tounging sucks. So it always sounds off time. and I doupt that's his real sound. He's playing with a weird mic like Dave Koz. but Eric's real.

i graduated college the year of kent state, so you can imagine that i was in the heart of rock 'n' roll. that same year, i happened to catch "swiss movement" by eddie harris and les mccann, which featured a ten minute version of this gene mcdaniels classic. and i've been a jazz fan ever since, moving to what is called smooth jazz since george benson's "breezin." eric marienthal ranks 'way up there!

Jazz doesn't have to be focused towards a certain age, it's for whoever can truly enjoy it. Just for the record. I guess in my personal opinion; I think Eric Marienthal is the greatest saxophone player of the current generation. Then again, I might be a little biaist too because I played with him twice, and soon to be a third time too.
