well I know this cause I once had a problem with the size of my ass like Jaco did. Mommy had to buy me a big toilet seat. But then I went on a diet and did ass excersizes and my ass got small but then I couldn't play bass anymore. I didn't feel strong anymore and I couldn't jam right. But then I ate a lot of pizza and ice cream and my ass got big again and now I can play happy music at gigs and be happy again.

The only thing that made Jaco different about the other players is that he had a bigger ass than they do. His ass was too big but it was good for him cause he stored all his talent in there. The cool thing is how Jaco got the idea of playing a fretless. He had bought a normal electric bass, and then later on he decided to buy a Contrabass. Unfortunately (Or maybe not so unfortunate at all) the contrabass couldn't take the air humidity of Florida, so it broke, and as Jaco hadn't got enough money to replace it, he simply removed the frets from the electric bass he had, and PUFF!! A fretless bass came out of it.

I've been playing fretless for a couple of years now, and I think it's easier, or at least, I took to it more naturally than I did the fretted bass. Of course, the fretless I've been using has fret markers, so that contributes to it as well.

If you think fretless is easier, you have another thing coming. Frets - once described as 'speed bumps' by the man himself make it a whole lot easier because you dont have to worry as much about intonation. Fretless bass is the real mans bass because it is the closest electric instrument to the classical string instruments such as violin, viola, cello and upright which naturally are fretless. Also true fretless's dont have markings so you have to know where to put your fingers of by heart.

Jaco was trying to get into the club and busted the club door, there was broken glass all over the ground, but he ran for it, and the French bouncer chased him down and kicked his ass so hard he died in the hospital-- the bouncer got something like 4 months in jail. Sure, Jaco arguably asked for a bruisin', but we have laws and courts to recover damages, not to take it into the streets. Death is not an apt penalty for property damage. That guy just read some things about some of Jacos comments towards the end of his life where he tried to incite people. Jaco was mentally ill and used to say all kinds of wacky shit just to get a rise out of people. He'd say, I'm a nigger,jew,spic,cracker all rolled into one and things like that. Ask the musicians who worked with him (of color) Hancock,Kenwood, etc, if he was a racist and they'd tell you NO he was mentally ill (at the end) P.C. people don't get the point sometimes.

I believe the steel drummer is Othello Molineaux (spelling?). Jaco loved the sound of the steel drum and originally wrote his Holiday For Pans album to feature Molineaux. It's a great show of traditionally non-jazz instruments used in jazz. This song has a calypso-jazz feel in the congas and bass, but Molineaux played with the band on other albums and tours as well.

As you can see by the various percussion instruments and french horns (yes they are) he wrote for a number of instruments not usually used in a jazz band. He is using what is called natural harmonics, but obviously you have no idea how hard it is to play. I have just learned this piece myself, and i honestly dud not think it sounded the best, but when you get the idea of what he is actually playing, it sounds SOOO much better.

It wasn't until I decided to get into Jazz that I really appreciated how good Jaco was. His playing is way beyond Sheehan and Terenziani and other Rock bassists because besides technique, Jazz requires you to constantly come up with something new, always improvising. It also requires a thorough knowledge of scales and the neck as well as chordal structure and harmonic theory. I have found that this is far beyond anything in Rock and for me at least, is much more difficult to master.

I checked him out. He's obviously a Billy Sheehan disciple but like Sheehan he suffers from the same limitations. His playing is pattern based meaning he plays patterns that he has memorized and practiced until he can play at high speed. The tapping and such is just for show IMO. I used to be a hard Rock/Metal player myself who was influenced by Sheehan and taught my self to play patterns at blinding speed. Anybody can do it with practice.

I advise you to buy his instructional video "Modern Electric Bass". It will teach you a lot. I'm not trying to put you down but at your level you're not at a point where you can accurately judge his greatness. It takes years of playing and studying before the finer points become apparent. It's way beyond simple technique. As for your "scales" comment, all playing is based on scales (including arpeggios). It's what you do within the scales that separates the men from the boys.

You obviously don't play or know much about bass. He is doing a lot more than playing scales. His harmonic invention was second to none. He was a pioneer on the use of harmonics and playing harmonically advanced solos on the electric bass. He was able to switch from straight walking to Funk at the drop of a hat. He is probably, along with James Jamerson, the most influential and copied electric bassist ever.

thmsjordan, Jaco smashed the "Bass of Doom" a few weeks before this video, smashing to pieces the neck. As you pointed, a Fretted Maple Precision Neck was retrofited to his Jazz Bass to record this. You can clearly see the wider neck at the top.

Oleg, My point is that Jaco was way past his prime when filming this. However, the cat knew how to hold the groove by instinct. He just put a fill here and there, very nicely instead of overplaying. To me, he was the one who open the door for everyone else to enter e new world.

The rest of it isn't warbly? If you listen at 3:35 roughly, the warbling keyboard is sustained into the regular sounding piano. Also if you listen to Liberty City off of "Live in New York City Vol. 1" he uses the same effect. This clearly was the sound he was going for.

Yup, that's Kenny. This was from a show called Night Music on NBC that broadcast late Sat. nights from the late 80's into the early 90's. The house band was David Sanborn on sax, Marcus Miller on bass, Hiram Bullock on guitar, and Omar Hakim on drums. Great show, folks like Dizzy, Branford, Carlos Santana & Wayne Shorter, Ruth Brown, George Duke and L.L. Cool J(!!!) would fall through.
