i play the upright "acoustic" and am pretty much self taught. When I'm the only bass in an esemble I'm constantly told to play louder and it ALWAYS hits the board. Maybe it doesn't matter to the audiance but it is super embarassing to me. And if its not supposed to happen then i don't know how to do it at all

In the case of an acoustic bass, this almost never happens cuz the action is Super high so the string rarely "hits the fretboard" plus in case of happening, doesnt sound that noisy... and in the case of the electric bass... if avoiding hitting the end of the fretboard is what you want... The TRB series bass has a very high action, John plays his TRBJP I and II at a very high action so this almost never happens... PLus you gotta know how to pluck hard to get a loud sound the right way...

i went to high school with john. he was a nice guy, very intelligent, and had a gentle spirit. years later saw him playing in chick corea akoustic band at yoshi's in oakland. one of the most inspired performances i have ever seen. he and charlie haden are the two greatest bass players imo.

And I say this not just to you, yagamei, but to everyone posting. If you want a ocmpetition, turn on a sporting event. This is supposed to be art and soloists are supposed to serve the music and express themselves, which they do in this clip; not outdo one another.

I think when you are talking about Bass Monsters you can't compare them , they all have reached a level to describe their emotions perfectly in bass.. it becomes a personal taste when you choose amongst Bass player like these.. I personally like Gary Willis Solos but i would never compare them with Patitucci's , Jaco's , Wooten's , Fierabracci's or whoever.

NO one is going to "top" Patitucci's solo here. It's as harmonically, rhythmically and technically advances as any bass solo EVER and that's the truth. Your opinion of this other dude must be high, but man, it just couldn't top this one, it could just be as good.

Hi, I was lucky enough to meet Brian after he used my drumset on a gig. I have a picture of him holding the ride tom. He signed the drumhead, "thanks for the Ludwigs" His ride at that time was an old K Zildjian with cracks and holes drilled to stop the cracking. I bet he found that in New Orleans. Nick and Roby were as close as they come. Nick is a truly amazing player. I first saw him play in about 1990 around Seattle with Jon Goforth and the Jazz Terrorists. He first impessed me by what he didn't play. The contrast between sparse comping to presenting astounding chops puts him in a very elite league indeed. Thank you for this!

Really great interplay between great musicians. I am a huge Keaggy fan and I think I have to add two additional musicians to my "I would like to see collaborate with Phil" list. Phil is truly a well rounded guitarist without a drop off in changing from musical style and guitar be it acoustic or electric. This separates him in my view from so many others whose playing is forced or seems out of their element when playing something not in their comfort zone so to speak. Truly excellent.

There is hardly any mention on the internet, that John has a brother Tom. I took Bass lessons from Tom in Livermore, CA, Back in the 80s. He's was a guitar teacher. He's very proud of John. He said John used to practice a lot, with his fretting hand against the wall, so that he couldn't pull his fingers away from the frettboard, forcing him to play tighter, wasting less energy. Tom claimed, John's dedication explains why John tours the world and he was stuck teaching guitar in a small town.

First of all, it's a trio. Every player needs to support themselves and fill in the empty spaces. The statement about Vinnie overplaying.. well it depends on how you look at it. He's filling the sound and making it enjoyable to watch and listen to. Look at Chick and John's reaction. They love his playing and the energy and excitement he's bringing to the music! Vinnie is overplaying.. Great playing isn't about just chops and how technically complex, fast, or busy one can play.. Jack DeJohnette is a good example of great drumming. Always listening and complimenting the other players, he plays with feeling, lots of energy and creativity and always musically impeccable.. I love the setting, the lighting for some reason is interesting, and this is a trio that I would LOVE to see put out some more music. They obviously have chemistry BIG-TIME. Kudos to John Patitucci. He sounds as intense as ever!

The thing is with duble and quadruple time (ie. 2/4 and 4/4) is that they're all pretty much interchangable. You can count this in 2/4, 4/4, 8/8, 2/2 and a whole bunch of others, but really all that does is imply different feel (half-time etc.). In improvised music, the feel could be changing the whole time so really, it's just easiest to think of it as 4/4 and feel it how you want.
