Senator Chafee was one of the last Republicans that I respected. I still call myself a Republican to honor those of the older generation: Teddy Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge (both of them), Eisenhower, and even Bush Sr. Despite living on the opposite ocean from Rhode Island, I still proudly have a "Lincoln Chafee for Senate 2006" bumper sticker on my car.

Chafee was a Republican at the time of his reelection. he lost because of that fact. 2006, there was strong anti-Republican sentiment and that's why they lost congress. No surprise he lost in a State that hasn't voted Republican since Reagen. That said he's still popular here and is a strong canidate for Governer or in the Senate again in 2012.
