've lived in Cuba, it has its strong points and weak points. The most disturbing thing I find is that people support its corrupt and oppressive government- its not even about ideology or anything else. Yes you have ADEQUATE education and healthcare, but what can you do with them? Many Cubans just sit in their rocking chairs and pass the day away because there is no opportunity to fulfill your dreams, or even simple pleasures like speaking your mind. And i'm not attacking anybodys preferences for food types, but I think the whole theory that organic food is healthy and better compared to industrial farmed food needs to be challenged because food today is in fact healthier than ever- comparing to some of the crap that my grandparents had to eat (organic- not that they thought of it as such). Technology is not the same as energy. Nanotechnologies still require energy input. Nothing we've developed yet has as much energy density as well as portability of oil. In the documentary "The Power of Community" which Megan talked about, we see how Cubans survived the sudden withdrawal of oil from their country. It was survival not necessarily preference.

In general I'd agree with you, but do you really want to bet your future on it? Take a look at the decline of Cantarell (14-20%) or some of the North Sea fields (25-30%). The bell curve may not be a fit here. We're on that plateau now. At this point, it isn't a given that oil from shale can make up the difference; we need to be thinking about making adjustments. According to Hirsch in the DOE report, we needed to start planning 25 years ago, and the recently released IEA report confirms it.

I doubt oil will peak in such a dramatic fashion. Generally speaking, production in oil fields follows a sort of plateau. Furthermore, there are untapped reserves of oil shale that could be developed in an economic fashion once the price of oil has made a comeback.

There is overwhelming evidence that it comes from ancient sedimentary organic matter (algae and zooplankton, not dinosaurs.) Hydrocarbons such as methane have been detected elsewhere in the solar system, but if there is an abiotic process of oil genesis taking place somewhere deep within the planet (doubtful), it isn't happening fast enough to compensate for our steady depletion of known reserves.

Yes, I've been reading doom and gloom premonitions for as long as I care to remember. The world won't be as dependent on oil in ten years time. Society will make sure it isn't. $300? I can remember four months ago predictions that oil would be $200 a barrel by November this year.. well November is here and a barrel of the black stuff is barely $50. It's not about the size of the reserve, it's about the rate of flow relative to demand. There may be plenty of $200 or $300 a barrel oil in a few years, not so much at $100. Google IEA World Energy Outlook 2008 and check out the decline rates. And these guys are optimists!

"Oil Companies" are actually Energy Suppliers and Exxon provides most of the Uranium to nuclear plants as well and Chevron is the largest producwer of commercial Geothermal Power and also Hydro-Electric. Saudis don't have as much oil that they say they do, but they are intentionally trickling the spigot. Truth of the matter is that a barrel is 47 gallons, and the Saudis get about 5 cents a gallon, and the Oil Companies make 10 cents a gallon of their end of the deal with government subsidies covering the loss of about $7 a gallon in transporting it and selling it to a refiner.

FULL of electronics, wtf do u know about the pug man, suspension, chassis, engine was all mechanically setup. Designed using electronics with an ECU. It was just lighter and mid engined, but he also had less hp then the S1 whine all you want hold onto whatever argument u think makes u happier, Ari won it. Even in 87 in the 205 if you watch any Doco about that event, Ari had mechanical issues. pwnt !

I did play the PS1 GT version of this track. I probably will get this game now. What is it DIRT 2.0 or something? This still is not enough to impress for me. The car is going up the hill 25% faster than actually possible. Track looks the same as in reality except it has more pavement now. This car looks like the Celica V6 twin turbo to me.

So there you have it. Hydrogen economy existed in the past and still exists to this day. It just isn't used in cars anymore. Why isn't hydrogen used? Because it's not competitive with gasoline price wise for new and very efficient technologies while the old tech is bulky, uneconomical and leads to more CO2 emissions than current fuels. The future holds promise, especially considering the expected decline in oil extraction which would make gasoline much more expensive to produce.

The comparison stands. You need more energy to produce gasoline than you get out of burning it. The same is true for H2. Hydrogen has been used in the past for lighting, cooking and even heating. My home city used hydrogen in that way for 100 years before it was phased out by electricity and natural gas. It was produced by coal gasification. Today hydrogen is made in enormous quantities for use in oil refineries. During shortages of liquid fuels many cars were converted to hydrogen in Europe.

There should be something like a hidroaccumulation plant, were wind power surplus raises the water to a tank, from which water is again released down the turbines when energy is becoming scarce. I'm a power engineer and I can tell that there's no way America will make up for fossil fuels with renewables. That role will be reserved to coal. As for what he sais about hydrogen I strongly disagree. Hydrogen storage is 4x more compact and 16x lighter than state of the art batteries. Don't tell me that mid sized sedans will ever drive on batteries as hydrogen is barely sufficient a carrier. And finally, gasoline is also an energy carrier just like hydrogen...

US oil production has been declining since 1970 and even at its height was less than 10 million barrels per day and guess what, we don't consume all that we produce, not we sell it abroad. If we drill in Alaska, some of that oil will go abroad and not be used for US consumption. US demand for petroleum peaked in 1978 at 18.8million barrels per day, so I doubt we were "still burning american oil for the most part" during the 70s oil crisis.

The only source you could produce that would agree that coal liquefaction to be "clean" is from the coal industry.
