The interesting thing about this scene and the whole "Candy Coated Clown" lip synch so cleverly done by Stockwell, is that it is a tool used by Frank to become "Dark" or sad and melancholy i.e. "now it's dark," and subsequently enraged. Roy Orbison's hit is one of the most heartfelt songs about loss and estrangement ever. Frank is obviously a very depressed individual dealing with a tragic past, such as child abuse, as many criminals do. People who are ao depressed often lash out in anger.
