This is an awesome toy, and all the work you've put into it shows. But as it is not just meant to be a toy for you, but entertainment for the viewers, you really need to work on content. The "GET THAT EVILDOER KAL!" schtick comes across as braggadocio.

This is a great accomplishment by KAL who in my view is probably the most talented and professional political cartoonist in the world today. But this animation doesn't match the wit of his print cartoons and could be much funnier. In the UK in the 1980s we had a hugely successful satirical series called Spitting Image in which politicians were sent up using rubber puppet caricatures and an often great script. If KAL can better that, he's really on to a winner.

That doesn't excuse bad writing. If all this is is a proof of concept it shouldn't be on the Economist website. I don't know if Kal does all the normal cartoons, if so he clearly has talent. But just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. There is nothing in this piece that justifies using 3D. Your audience doesn't care if you got something boring finished in 4 days. I'd rather see a simple drawing that took 20 minutes but has an idea behind it.

About a month ago I saw Kal speaking at an internation convention of political cartoonists in D.C. It was done as a proof of concept for some Hollywood people that are interested in this new technology. They needed to see how quickly animation could be turned around and they did this aimation in 4 days - and they can do it even faster now. 3D has been around, but not with those kind of quick turn around times.

The hands are all wrong. The fingers are never flat like that. She should look like she has zills in her hands or something. Imzadi actually danced with the sword on her head, and they captured the motion. Took about 100 minutes to do the recording of 10 dances with a few takes. Then it took a few days to clean up. Then it took a month to get the carpet and room and cloth to look right. The motion capture was the easy part.

At SIGGRAPH 2006 I went to the PhaseSpace motion capture stage and put on a "wet suit" full of sensors, just like Andy Serkis did when he played Gollum. PhaseSpace liked my dancing enough that they rendered this sample of one belly dance move. Now I just need to get a bunch of them strung together with some music. (No, that naked model is not me!)

Intermediate results from an ongoing research project. Shown is the projection of the 4D orbit in 2D. The blue curve is the orbit while the red, green and blue crosses are the equilibria. The film shows the result of branch following rather than time evolution. The orbit seems to approach some invariant torus in the 4D phase space. Any comment is welcome.
