My Philco model 650B I recently restored. Power transformer was cooked hard due to the rectifier tube having been installed improperly. The transformer B+ was shorted directly to ground. All caps and electrolytics have been replaced. The set has been fully aligned. The antenna attached to the radio is a 20' piece of wire running through my attic. I also use a 150' long wire.

YES!!!! I searched for the largest batteries of the right voltage that would fit in the radio. Then I made a metal spacer to fill in the gap. It was pretty cool having a small radio playing, but with substantial sound.

I have no clue what the Thermister is for or where it is in the radio. I would like to get the schematic for it and then maybe I could figure out. My wild guess would be that it is in the audio output. But three volts could not produce much heat. Maybe they did what I do, vastly over engineer.

In Brazil first was Philco, then Philco-Ford, then Philco-Hitachi, then Philco-Itau, then Philco again, and today is Philco but owned by Gradiente I guess but will be sold to a chinese groupt. yes it is! especially when you have to replace a component and you can't fiqure out which one it is on the foil side of the board usless itz labeled or if it has less parts. i have a 1966 voice of music tube record player with amp chassis on a printed circuit board. i'm in the middle of recapping it.

It took me about a half and hour to do that coil. You take your time an neaten up the windings every few turns. And the Scotch tape really helps the process, if you should drop the wire you don't have to start all over again. Glad you were able fix your coil. Thanks.

That coil re-wind job looks like it just came from the factory! That must really be some painstaking work. When I was working on a Motorola radio IF can, the wire to the coil broke but luckily I was able to peel a little more off the coil and it wasn't too brittle.

No I don't, but that's a very good idea and will try and do that next time. However this is what I did, I got five or six small pieces of Scotch tape at the ready. I soldered one connection and started winding the coil from the bottom up in this case. Every few turns I neaten up the turns and Scotch tape them. I continue this process until I complete the coil, then I put one long run of Scotch tape around the coil one time. I then soldered the other connection.

The TR-801 indeed is very nice. The manual eject pushes the 8-track out a little bit so it can be taken out easier. That Philco is very neat with good sound!

If you notice the TR-802, the model up from that one, the pause and record buttons are reversed around... The manual eject should eject the tape half way and shut off the player, The TR-802 has a seprate motor for that or uses the same motor for the tape (Not Sure), but the one you have TR-801, I think the button should just push the tape out half way without any motor, I have both models in storage somewhere..... They are great recorders

Here is a Philco 1950's AM radio with lighted dial. It will need some repairs. Also, a GE 1970's solid state AM/FM set I got in Alamogordo, NM. Just needed to spray the controls and it works fine.
