It is so wonderful, but it always makes me sad... For we, Hungarians this music has a special feeling, because reminds us the revolution of October in 1956. Then only this overture was sounding in the radio and it could be heared all the time.

The conductor is ahead of the beat when he conducts - this is not uncommon, although I agree it can be disorientating to watch! The basic idea is that if you conduct exactly on the beat, the tempo inevitably drags. Hence, professional conductors tend to conduct slightly ahead of the beat.

Except that the composer wasn't American but Czech, that the music was composed while he was visiting New York City (and not the far West), and finally that it was composed in 1893, when the "old west cowboys" had already fallen into folklore. It is not the first "American" symphony. But that's not what matters. What matters is what it brings to you and the feelings which awaken when you hear it. That's what music is all about. Emotional not contextual.

One thing that I love to do is listen to certain parts of my New World Symphony CD while I'm driving around the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs; it feels like I'm in a Western, riding through Monument Valley with John Wayne! That's what I hear every time I listen to this symphony - the Old West, cowboys, cattle drives, dusty trails, mountains, etc. This is truly the first "American" symphony.

I saw this performance on TV at work. I thought it was so good that I quickly wrote down the name of it and went home. I had forgotten about it until a few months later today when I came across what I had written down while cleaning. So I just now goggled it and this video was one of the first links. It's still absolutely amazing and she is only 14 years old. I am a hip-hop fan too, but this is really good classical music. Very moving.

I have never played anything near the level of this, for obvious reasons. It makes me wish I could continue to play French Horn but I had to stop because of academic reasons (I was not playing to play music forever). I got goosebumps listening to this. i don't think so. i must say that i enjoy this kind of music but waht i really like is classical music and this is not one of the strauss or rossini overtures orr a beethoven composition...its much more simple but its really good too! i enjoy to listen to it really! ^^ its a very good job

I played violin 1 for this piece in our orchestra around 5 years ago,but it was the short version, it was only like 8 minutes.. It's such a beautiful song, everyone's liking it even though they didn't know this song (we're Indonesians) and they gave standing applause for it.. But I have to admit that this one is much more wonderful.. Well, it's by New York Philharmonic after all.. Still a long way to go to be as good as them.. =)
