Also, I do believe Glass, along with Rzewski, and Part, did not want to be mindless sheep themselves, for what would it matter if they composed in the Style of Bach, Stockhausen, or even Rachamaninoff? All they would find is limitation. That is why they are not conformists to the so-called norm. If we stuck with Bach, music would've been dead by the end of the 18th century, becoming monotonous. It is one thing to be taught, but there comes a point which transforms listening into composing music.

I don't mind Xenakis, Stockhausen, or Messiaen for that matter. However, I find more emotion in minimalist works such as Glass or Arvo Part, or John Taverner. What I love about Minimalism is that the emotion is not there, the work must be Deconstructed and applied to your human Being. It has no meaning unless you put meaning to it. Most of music has a pre-set meaning and interpretation, from Haendel to Xenakis. Minimalism is an interesting style, for you get out as much as you put in.

Well, let's not compare it to Nickelback quite yet. The difference might be more likened to the ornate beauty of Shakespeare compared with the sparse, pared-down prose of Hemingway, or his descendants Carver, Yates, Ford, etc. Apples and oranges, despite the domain. We must respect and appreciate both of course. There's no reason for an arbitrary hierarchy or parochialism with no justification or regard. It's not Nickelback or Creed.

Well, I enjoy the music of Philip Glass, and I am a composer and was a performer, and Ives and Bartok are among my favourite composers, along with Schoenberg. I think you are a little misled in that you feel your own experience is universal. It is not. Minimalist music requires a different way of listening, which you have not mastered yet. A little humility would not come amiss, I think.

Philip Glass is a dimwitted Hollywood hack. this music is cheap, weakly constructed, two chord trash. You've got to be an utter simpleton to find anything of value in music like this. If totally mindless banality had a face, it's face would be Philip Glass. Seriously, what the fuck is this guys obsession with dropping the tonic to the leading tone every time he uses a minor chord. Can he think of no other way to progress besides this cloying little device hes been using in films forever?

Wasn't it the great composer Robert Schumann who said that we would be doing music a disservice if we only praised the good without criticising the bad? This woman plays this piece without any feel - listen to Glass' own recording of this and you'll see what I mean. Too fast as well, and poor dynamics that have nothing to do with a compressor or with youtube.

I s'pose for many of us musos the price tag does put a Fazioli a bit beyond our love of minimalistic music. So, you'd expect an expert in cybernetic fractals should be able to figure out how to couple a third pedal to her Roland EP2000 ....and then metamorphose Philip's score for electronic piano. Last time I asked, she said "Trust me, I'm a doctor". I'll get in touch for an appointment....and keep you guys posted.

Yeah...treat yourself to a decent Piano. Sell your Steinway $ Sons grand: it's way past it's used-by. Then put your name down for a Fazioli 308 ....buy a Bosendorfer Imperial while you're waiting. While you're Metamorphosing your new Fazioli third pedal in Philip's magical score, enjoy hearing new harmonies exactly as the composer originally imagined. You won't feel bad about getting rid of the old piano. It's obvious the Sons had lost the plot after Großvater Steinweg died last century.

I'm trying to learn this piece, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to work the pedals. I don't use the pedal at all when the left hand is playing alone (like in the intro) to make it a bit more staccato, but I'm not finding a good way to use the pedal once the right hand comes in (with the melody, not the low, low C octave it plays during the intro) Does any one have any advice? I disagree. I don't think moving your body necessarily adds more emotion to a piece. If anything, it can distract from the music. You can have a perfectly expressive interpretation while sitting still. Movement can be a nice touch, but it isn't necessary for a good performance.

You obviously have no idea how to play the piano properly. The more involved you are in your playing, the more emotion goes into the song. Look at the way her body is swaying when she plays. Her right hand is gently floating up and down the keyboard. She IS playing this piece naturally. It would be absurd to play a song like this while sitting perfectly still and with perfect composure.

Umm, I'm guessing you didn't get very far in your piano playing but having hands cross-over is quite common. What do you think would be easier: keeping your left hand playing constant eigth-notes and crossing your right hand over for 1 chord or shifting both of your hands down (with a seemless transition of the eight notes from your left to right hand), and then shifting both of your hands back up again?

glass' piano works, i have found, can be physically very difficult to play. one has to have incredible technique or else you will end up hurting yourself. for example, the arpeggios she starts at 3:30. it takes stamina and great technique to not strain yourself through that passage (and those are everywhere in the metamorphosis)

I really detest people who do nothing else but complaining. As a professional pianist, let me tell you: she isn't 'butchering' his work, it's ALL about interpretation and unless you are mr. Glass himself,I don't think you should critisize her way of playing. If you still think she's 'butchering' Glass' work, I can only conclude that you are tonedeaf and should stay far far away from everything that has to do with music.

Her interpretation is non-existent actually, seen as she sight reads the entire thing..there is no real feeling to it whatsoever, the only feeling she knows how to express is written on the page. She's just a pianist doing her job, yes it is art but she didnt express it in the correct manner i feel.

I love this piece. Also it's quite easy to learn because it does so much repeating and the LH stays the same throughout the whol piece. However, I think you need good fingering for some parts of the RH.
