Thanks a lot. Very useful information.

Keep your subject in the dark and pick a bright background then use a slow shutter sync, or second curtain shutter setting on your flash, this will give your background extra time to expose before the flash fires exposing the subject.
By: cameralabs. on 18 Nov 08, 02:19:30
If you want to avoid the flash and a slow shutter speed, but still record night lights, then your only hope is to use the maximum ISO with the lens aperture at its smallest f-number. If you have any more Qs, feel free to post in the dslrtips section of the cameralabs . com forums...

but is there anyway doing so without having to use the flash? it tends to create shadow which irritates me alot.
By: cameralabs. on 17 Nov 08, 23:58:15
Someone just asked this two posts comments down! Just follow the night tutorial at dslrtips . com but force your flash to fire. The flash will illuminate the person and any movement will be mostly invisible - but ask them to stay as still as possible anyway!
By: truNGiiesofly. on 17 Nov 08, 23:37:40
thanks alot! but do u have anyway where i can take night picture (human) with the shutter speed/aperture being low and not have blur picture since human tends to move alot?
By: copper4534. on 16 Nov 08, 22:05:19
Thanks for al the quality vids. I've recently bought a Canon 450D ad was starting to get a little overwhelmed with the different settings.

It's surprisingly easy! Just follow the tutorial at dslrtips . com and force your flash to fire. The flash will illumionate the person and any movement will be mostly invisible - but ask them to stay as still as possible anyway!

is there any tips when trying to get a picture with a human subject while trying to get a good exposure of the background. Is it going to be a problem since its hard to get the person completely still.

Thank you for a very useful video.
By: cameralabs. on 10 Nov 08, 20:02:26
Noise is the texture and random specks you see in shadows or on flat areas of colour (like a blue sky) on a photo. As the ISO increases, so does the noise. PS - Don't forget to check the actual dslrtips . com site for more tips, and also the dslrtips section on the cameralabs forums if you have any questions...
By: jimmydrinkworld. on 10 Nov 08, 11:37:10
sorry, i'm a beginner and may i know whats noise people are talking about in photography?

By: puloh1234. on 04 Nov 08, 12:24:39
hye..i'm beginner.i just bought a new dslr pentax k200d..just wanna ask how to take a good sunset view? what iso better to use? i'm going to use the aperture mode..what about the exposure and the aperture settings?
By: cameralabs. on 03 Nov 08, 20:04:39
Yep, the less light there is, the more you will notice noise.
By: Luisao69. on 03 Nov 08, 19:13:39
The greatest and the most versatil is Canon EOS 400D or 450D.. I have 400D and 40D and I prefeer the first.. less weight, and more or less the same quality. And if you combine that with an 18-200 you have camera for all kind of situations I think.. Im just a rockie in photography.. but its a great hobbie! Great video! Thanks! from Spain.
By: wahliaodotcom. on 03 Nov 08, 18:23:15
hi. I use a Nikon D300 and D700, and I noticed noise at higher ISO in the night for these two cameras changes with the amount of light available. Lesser light, more noise. Is this normal?
By: cameralabs. on 01 Nov 08, 03:32:35
I used 100 ISO for the best quality. There's some notes about this at dslrtips . com...
By: thecritic2000. on 01 Nov 08, 02:50:08
Good video. I wish you had mentioned what ISO you were using.
By: jackjack207. on 29 Oct 08, 23:07:38
thanks..really good tips. I've tried it last night and the result is amazing.
By: cameralabs. on 28 Oct 08, 08:34:46
You can use a flash if you'd like to illuminate a person close to the camera - but it'll only be effective for a few meters, so if the subject is further way, don't bother.
By: jackjack207. on 28 Oct 08, 06:28:18
good video, i am a beginner...did you need to use flash for night photography?
By: Smeggypoo. on 25 Oct 08, 20:36:23
Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
By: cameralabs. on 25 Oct 08, 19:40:43
You've got it - a small f-number means a large aperture and the maximum light coming through the lens, but also a small depth of field. A large f-number means a small aperture and more in focus, but less light gets in. You can use large f-numbers for night photography for a bigger depth of field, but you'll need longer shutter speeds to compensate for the small aperture, and if they go beyond 30 seconds, you'll need to use Bulb mode with a cable release. Ultimately it's all about experimenting!
