I am sure that most Youtube users will remember this classic title sequence done in the 80's with a revolving box. Co incidentally, it was the box that fascinated me from when I watched this programme as a child

The thing that amazes me to this day was the ability of television producers and presenters to use music and use it well. That's the thing that really dominated those shows and probably scarred more than a few minds permanently. This theme is a great example.

There were only two things I feared from the 80's. Daleks and the sinister theme tune of Picture Box...and it revolving eerily to the tune! If Syvester McCoy had've been confronted by Daleks spinning around to the Picture Box theme tune. I would not have slept soundly for years!! LOL

Ha ha yeah, I totally agree with you mate. I also remember those days off school at home feeling "ill" with a "bad stomache" or something similar lol, and I would often watch this, and it has stuck in my memory too ever since, the spinning box and the music etc. Tales me waayyyyyyy back :D

Thank goodness I finally found this, thank you for posting it as I thought I had dreamt it, had forgotten the name. I too have memories of the tv coming out at lunchtime if too wet to play outdoors but we got excited when allowed to watch "rainbow"

I can imagine this music in a film version of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Red Shoes', in which the main character is cursed to dance forever until she dies. This would be the music - a simple little melody but with an underlying sense of horror and dread, which plays on and on endlessly.

The opening music was a kind of Tales of the Unexpected for children, very creepy. I'm clearly not the only kid who wished he hadn't faked an illness c. January 1981 and ended up watching the revolving casket and presenter Alan Rothwell whose sinister smile always seemed to say " I've buried fifteen kids under my patio and you'll be next...."

To the people that asked me where i got this from: There is/was a website called 'tv cream' (google it!) where there are/were various mp3's of 60',70's,80's and 90's tv themes. Quite a list actually. I compiled a CD of these 2 years ago and have some hidden gems, but unfortunately, no film footage - TV Ark is a good site for old tv openings and closing themes; but even some of those are here on the 'Tube!

Oh Jesus Christ! I was mildly, but somewhat comfortingly, creeped out until 0.44 when it reached the part I wasn't familiar with. I'm really freaked out now. I too remember this foldly from my youth. I know we sued to watch it at school, but all my memories are of watching it in bed, or curled up under a blanket on the sofa... just like everyone else!

This track and most of the other ITV Schools' Interlude pieces along with some BBC ones from the 1970's and 1980's can be found on a new double CD called "Watch With Teacher". In response to my last comment a couple of months ago, I still think that is one of the longest interval I have seen on ITV Schools that I know of. The music over the slide is Nature Cycle /Flower Sequence 2 and the music over the clock is Sunny Woodlands suggesting that it came from the Autumn term of 1982 if I think so.

I can't think if the schools intervals were ever as long as 5 and a half minutes when they were on ITV between 1979 and 1987 but certainly when it was moved to Channel 4 in September 1987 it was as long as 7 minutes between junctions. ITV Schools on Channel 4 was the best era that I remember.

The music over the Granada endcap logo is the last few bars of the theme to "Evolution" I remember when it was repeated on Channel 4 years later, the endcap was changed to the generic ITV granada endcap with schools added in, a shame, when you consider we saw Thames, Central and Yorkshire endcaps right up to the end of ITV Schools on Channel 4

Picture Box was made by Granada tv and presented by Alan Rothwell, who as an actor appeared in Coronation Street and Brookside amongst other shows and was also in the film Zeppelin as I remember. I too remember the opening titles and no doubt watching it at school as well as at home!

I remember being scared of the rotating box as well as the music. Because it's an empty box, but it looks as though it has been designed to hold something... to present something... That cushion in the middle...? maybe a severed finger - or a hand - would rest on it. You invite your victorian friends around, wind-up the music, and watch the severed body part rotate. Not bothered about commenting on this episode, but the music is something else,Had to endure it in the school TV room way back, It conjures up images of perhaps going back in time to a victorian fairground, or you can imagine witnessing a manifestation of a ghost fair, and this being the music that you're hearing! really erie.I just remember feeling strange when it was on. What's the name of the theme tune??? Stuart Maconie played it on Freak Zone, BBC Radio 6 a few weeks ago and it's been gnawing my innards out to know the name of it ever since. Does it say on the end credits, kind person???
