Like I said, they're in-ear monitors. pjfmnet is correct, many times there are also wedge and near-field (a speaker pointed backwards) monitors on the stage as a backup. the mix that is sent to the monitors is usually very close to the main mix, though often without vocal processing. The reason for this is that you must be able to hear what you sound like in comparison to the other instruments (dynamics, bpm) for everything to sound right.

thats not quite true. most bands/artists use both. they have a monitor on stage as a backup if either the ear piece has a technical fault or theyre not happy with the mix mid-song and need to hear something else. so when they pull them out they can hear the monitors, rather than just noise coming from every direction

hey just to clear up any confusion: those ear pieces probably serve 2 main purposes,earplugs so they dont go deaf, and as an in-ear monitor so they can get a mix of what is going on though a wireless connection... most amateur bands can't afford these things so they usually wear foam ear plugs which work fine
