This is a great explination. I remember 8 years ago several of my mates put up a notepad document in an editable section of our school network in a similar manner. Of course the more people who found out the more people used it and eventually several people were editing the same document at once and comments were lost. Good concept, but flawed somewhat flawed the more it gets used.

No. Just no. The fact of the matter is journalists are TRAINED to deliver and research "news", and editors are TRAINED to make sure only interesting and non-offensive content gets published. The vast, vast majority of bloggers are not, so it's just becomes a source of pointless, sometimes offensive, misinformed drivel. I'd go on the BBC to read blogs any day. The reporters give informed opinions. I wouldn't go to Blogger for news though.

that's just a vlog. aka video log. same basic thing. but as you notice, television did not entirely wipe out writing in the section of news. there is still a certain stylistic quality in writing that cannot be achieved through speech and visuals, just like there is a quality that cannot be achieved through written word. they are both necessary. so, why youtube will never replace blogs, it will take a good share of the audience.

Once again, excellent job explaining how the networks currently work. Obviously, there's the whole theory vs. practice thing. Everyone's free to use it how they want (within the limits of the website's capabilities) and not everyone is an expert on maximizing potential and not everyone wants to follow up on that potential. @pristinewaters: Friends aren't exactly a new invention, you know. If you have no friends you can always make some the way normal people do: by talking to people. Join a club or association, go to social events. You get to meet people AND do something you like, or learn something useful. Work on your social skills if you need to. In theory, yeah that's how it works. Everyone's happy. In practice, everything falls apart (mostly due to the content, and the people, there's nothing really wrong with the system). However, as you can see with politics being a prime (but not the only) example, the Social (alternative) media is not left alone by those in power. If you can explain the IRS in plain English, you'd be doing the courts a favor because apparently they can't figure it out.

Yeah, they keep your photos really safe. No they don't. Remember the little incident where private photos on flickr became public for some hours, due to a bug? I recommend not uploading photos which you would mind some stranger seeing. There are other ways to backup, like burning them on a cd. Anyway, there is no other convenient way of sharing a lot of photos with family who is far away :/
