Our overuse of H2O is easy to verify. Aquifer measurements in many places suggest that that is the case. Even though the amount of water is constant, it's used in ways that decrease it's availability in many locales. Much is wasted. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lake Mead disappear in 50 years or so.

You're right. There is as much water as has always been, because it's a closed system. But some of it is either unavailable (locked up in icecap), or expensive (deep-well drilling, desalinization, building dams). Rainwater capture infrastructure has to be extensive to catch even a minute amount of runoff, and dams and percolation basins are about it for us. We just don't have enough of them. Try carting an iceberg from Greenland to Florida and see how much is left upon arrival.

After watching all these videos, I must say that it is one of the most depressing messages I have heard. The truth is, our non renuable resources will deplete. He is obviously terribly disappointed that he is not witnessing the outward aggression towards the government that he lived through in the sixties. He is despondent towards a lack of revolutionary zeal that was so present when he became famous and recognised. I had to read Fahrenheit 451 when I was a freshmen in high school. Not the same as 1984 but still has a lot of similar themes regarding a government with extreme power. I loved it, of course I already had an interest in history/philisophy/politics... most of the other kids in the class hated it, didn't read it, or didn't understand it. Plus the teacher wasn't good at sparking debates. I strongly believe philisophy/Ethics should be mandatory classes as early as middle school.

Educated women tend to reproduce less, and education is only affordable if the country is more wealthy. I would think that the hardest part would be making eating the dead Muslims a socially acceptable nutritional resource to the African tribes would be the largest hurdle. Africa isn't all wasteland. Anyway, with proper irrigation methods and bioengineered crops, you'd be surprised how much even arid regions can produce. You're right though, we need to be smart about how we help them. That's why I'm a big fan of micro-lending. We need to find African entrepreneurs who have good ideas, and give THEM the funds to start workable businesses which can employ and feed the local populace. Shoving "aid" at peasants does nothing except make them dependent on us.

I agree with you, c6gunner. I just have a hard time seeing how they will ever get to that point. The population is way too high in a lot of places. They don't have enough good farm land etc. to ever support their own population. I'm not saying that we shouldn't support them but we need to do it in a smarter way. The reason for lack of abundance is lack of farming. It used to be common for even people who lived in urban areas to grow "victory gardens" and farming food was wide spread. Even then, we had thousands of acres of open country and open fields of unpopulated land across the United States, Canada and Europe. The same is true today. You're right, there's room for improvement -- it was our first video! But the reason for including iron as one of the resources is that iron has been EXTREMELY important in the history of northern Minnesota -- it is the reason so many people moved there, and its depletion is the reason for their economy's collapse in recent decades.
