This is like a pop music tune as far as classical music goes but done by a master it is FAR from trivial. He speeds up the tempo slightly in his playing, giving the piece more of an urgent energy as opposed to regal at it's waltz like pace. At 1:20 to 1:25 he goes a quick repeated, descending structure that would do ANY heavy metal guitarist proud when played on an electric guitar. It's amazing to realize what an musical instrument is capable of in the right hands.

i prefer maisky's interpretation too. although they're both played with equal beauty and emotion. dont be hatin' because onepiecefreec prefer's maisky's. it's a personal preference so you shouldn't hate. my interpretation of this prelude is like a combination of maisky and rostropovich- Rostropovich's bowing and fingering combined with maisky's tempo, phrasing and rubato. and of course some of my own conventions too... haha

In fact, one of the first things I do when I decide that I'm going to learn a new piece is gather as many recordings and performances as I can and listen to them so much that I know the ins and outs of the piece from a compositional standpoint. Then come the tireless hours of practice, mastering the technique and working on your own interpretation.

Quick rundown: The arpeggio (a crude form of it) was in FF 1, 2 and 3. FF4, 5 and 6 had the full song but only 7 had the same harmonies that are featured in this performance. You can hear in the SNES games that there is the basic melody and string accompaniment but FF7 was the most evolved form of the Prelude - that's why this is listed as the FFVII Prelude. Subsequent Preludes (8 and on) haven't even sounded anything like this. I really like the addition of the choir. Awesome.

Beautiful. Though I realize this was in a number of FF games, it makes me think of the depth and beauty of the experience that is playing FFVII. As the credits roll on the opening screen, this wonderful opening track only hints at the experience to come. Thanks very much for posting this. I'm no ff7 fanboy, infact I enjoyed 6 equally as much as 7, I've played them all. I don't recall ever hearing the melody in 6, although it has been a long time since I've played it. It's possible the melody was added in the re-release, since you mention the opening movie - there was no opening movie in the original. The only thing I remember is the arpeggio on the title screen, no melody.
