No, no, it is TABLA. The two drums played with fingers. There are three musicians here: Ravi Shankar - sitar, Alla Rakha - tabla and some guy with black glasses, who plays tambura. By the way darbuka is an Arabian drum as I know... :-)

I have it on CD, and Pandit Ravi Shankar introduces it as "one the most beautiful ragas of the late afternoon." Indeed it is - has extensive deep bass tones for the first six minutes or so. Namaste.

I agree that almost every "spritual master" I've ever heard of has been a fraud. Sai Baba, Prabupada, whoever. I consider Ravi Shanker here to be a little dense, spitting out outdated philosophy, and having an annoying sounding voice. But I don't see how he compares to the rest. His programs are pretty genuine, from what I can tell (although I disagree with him on many points). Is there any particular reason you think him a fraud? The full program taught by Sri Sri includes asanas, traditional pranayamas, mudras, mantra meditation. All theses are common practices in yogic traditions and he's not trying to say they are unique to him. But Sudarshan Kriya is unique to him. Very good, powerful practice. In sanskrit, it's Om Mani Padme Hum (at least, this is how I used to see it); but in Tibet, they have their own pronounciation, and they recite it as you see in the title. I think both version is all right, for both have a long past, and languages do change - it's the wish, the emotion and the tradition that counts for the mantra. (But that's just an opinion, I'm not much of an expert.)

It is in a rhytm cycle of sixteen beats, and is an adaption by Ravi Shankar fron the raga known as Pancham-Se-Ghara. I have listened to this piece hundreds of times over the years and even slowed it down; if Alla Rakha ever missed a beat echoing what Ravi Shankar played, I'll be damned if I can find it. Everyone should listen to his explanation (Ravi's) on how this sort of music is made up. I found it to be quite informative.

He's not his father. He's a great player in his own right, paying homage to his dad's influence on jazz and saxophone, but he's also an example of masters past and present such as Shorter, Joe Henderson, Lovano, Rollins, Stitt, Brecker, and others. And like most of us, he's looking for (and I think finding) his own voice. His music is more rhythmic (!) than his dad's and more sophisticated in the sense that it goes beyond the 60's into modern harmonic structures. Not as innovative, but inspired!
