Isn't it amazing how 90% of the British Musicians during this period were trying to imitate African American blues and jazz musicians and early rock musicians like Buddy Holly, Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc.? Not to mention Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, BOB DYLAN etc. Music in America is every bit as good as music in Britain, so get off your high horses and learn to appreciate the quality of music rather than the nationality of the artists.

And don't get me wrong either, but Basie also covered some of the area's that Duke didn't. Remember that Duke was a mostly crossover and commercial band in the earlier years, and even still, the Basie band had those down home musicians who had TOO MUCH soul, man lol. It's not even funny. But these two musicians and bands... consider them to have some of the BEST bands in ANY MUSICAL GENRE in history.

My advice....Never ever go and see the artists you admired when you were young. Voices go, performance goes, ...it becomes a requiem. To be blunt I love the Beatles etc and include the Moody B's in my collection but they are too old. Is this off of a video or something that is commercially available? How could I get a full copy of this video? I would love to be able to show the whole performance to my students. Mulligan had his bari goldplated around 1993 and he died in 1996, so for this to be added in the last ten months, it had to have come from somewhere. As far as horn recommendations go, get a Conn. They worked for Mulligan and Carney.

I was lucky to be stationed in the UK from 69 to 72. I saw the Moodys several times, Isle of Wight was one, along with Jimi H and Jim M and a ton of others. One of my last concerts I attended was the Moodys at the Royal Festival Hall. We had front row center seats, the kicker was we hitch hike from Norwich UK to London (90m) with not tickets in hand. Went to the ticket booth, there were 2 cancellations, guess who got them. They had the orchestra with them, tslk about being in heaven.

I happen to like all of the Moody's records but here are my 3 favorite: Threshold of a dream, Seventh Sojourn, and their first album. I can't wait to see them again in 2009! I have been a fan since 1969 so next year will mark me being a fan for 40 years! Oh my goodness!!!! How the heck did I get so old???? Lol....well, at least I feel young and listening to the Moody Blues certainly helps with that for me!
