lena, I think he actually has something wrong with his nails. Although I'm not certain about this. I remember trying to copy him when I was a child by covering my own nails with plasters. I couldn't control the keys though and I left little bits of grey sticky stuff all over the piano...

I only wrote that because it was in reply to someone else who seemed to think I was expressing something ridiculous. I do love Schubert - but generally (in my opinion) it goes on for too long. And the reason is because Schubert was trying to use a classical form to express romantic ideas.

Everything Brendel plays is well-done and suave, however, I feel that his Schubert is a little too "classical" for my taste. When Schubert uses repeated notes in his melodies, one HAS to delineate them carefully so that they don't all same the same. Each one has to have it's own individual sounds and character according to the melodic content.

Yes, I have indeed played it over and over again. I do love this sonata and I do love Schubert's music in general. But there's always the problem of an imbalance between form and content with Schubert. He used Classical forms but the long lyrical Romantic tunes weren't appropriate for sonata form, for example. Sonata form is best suited for motivic themes. Nevertheless, I do love this piece. Please don't be offended. This opinion isn't just mine - it's generally accepted.

This is perhaps my favourite piano sonata but it really is too long. I wish Schubert had curbed his desire to get all his tunes in one piece. Nevertheless, those tunes are beautiful. Brendel sounds fantastic on this too

Bad balance on the recording, and it is a good idea to orchestrate it, but it doesn't hold the essence as it does with piano. I would bet there are some piano players in the audience that were kind of dissapointed though, its quite a feat on piano, thats for dang sure. I hear that ErlKonig was created after Schubert and a friend saw a dark figure with a bundle in his hand (which just happened to be child). They were racing down the road in a horse carriage. The next day Schubert learns that he saw a farmer racing his child to the hospital, but the child was too late and died. That's what inspired Schubert to write this.

Actually, the first version I ever heard was sung by a woman, and it gave me chills especially after reading the translation of the text by von Goethe. So whether it was sung by a man or woman it really doesn't matter, it will still have the same effect. The Erlking is a difficult song and Anne Sofie von Otter is awesome indeed, give credit where it is due.

Yes, the synchronization is dreadful but Horowitz is not. It's amazing how he can play so dispassionately, as if he were choosing a pai of shoes; yet if you close your eyes it's a different story. This is the most emotive and poignant renditions of this impromptu I've heard.

Too true. Vengerov got a lot of power and that's good but he cannot control it. There are songs that requires a lot gentleness like Chopin's Nocturne No. 20 Violin arrangement, and this one too. Brendel's not afraid of some volume later in the piece to make the crescendos more striking. People often times forget to crescendo in softer pieces. Not here... He starts out perfectly soft, and does all sorts of things to accentuate the peaks in this piece without overexaggerating anything. The result is absolutely gorgeous, and it would be beneficial to study how he plays this piece and apply it to our own playing of other pieces. Dissect it intellectually.

I feel as if I am compelled to post after watching this awe inspiring performance. When I first heard the Impromptu number 3, I thought as if it was a contrived piece of arpellegos, however it gets better and better with every listen and I have been proved wrong. Some of these petty criticisms beggar belief. All the competitors are wonderful pianistsbut it was a competition. Someone had to win. Vitaly Pisarenko is an amazingly good pianist. These videos do not do justice to his beautiful sound. I have got to know him in the last two of days and attended his his concert last night: a program of Liszt and Stravinsky. It technically AND musically the finest exhibition of piano playing I have seen in 40 years. For my money the judges got it right.

There were two excellent pianists-like you mentioned Alexander Motouzkine, and Denys Masliuk, both very musical, but Masliuk is techically more secure. I watched all rounds of the competition-let me say he was really not the best-not techical not musical. There were many pianists much more interesting then he was. He is very average good student-not more. It is very sad how this competitions are manipulated.

He's so hot...Not only does he play well...he has an iron will, smells good, AND he's really sweet. His smell mesmerizes me every time I go near him and I think that he also has one of the sexiest voices in the world. :) So what if he couldn't smile when he won the competition? Maybe he felt too much in his heart and the victory meant so much to him that he couldn't smile!This man literally sacrifices everything in his life for piano. I watched the final of the competition and have to say that he was the best pianist technical wise in the competition and therefor deserved to win (because it's liszt), but wasn't an interesting pianist. One very reliable standard of Good Music is LONGEVITY. If something is being played today that was composed in some foreign land and still stirs our musical sensibilities it's most probably GOOD. BUT ... this isn't totally reliable.
