After installing the shelf plugin and restarting QS, I could not setup a trigger for it because QS wasn't able to find the shelf command (it only showed the catalogue entry). The solution is to refresh the catalog (in the preferences tab) of the "Shelf & Clipboard" item by pressing the circular arrow in the bottom right.

I just installed this and love it. However, I've noticed in the tutorials, the Quicksilver interface is icons, while mine is just words and tiny icons and looks kinda crappy. I am running 10.4.10 and downloaded this program from the website. Any ideas?

Besides Plasma and KWin, I've not noticed many - if any - differences between KDE 3 and KDE 4 applications, and the ones I do notice are the things that exist in KDE 4 that don't in KDE 3. What can you find so intensly annoying that's driving you away from it? Why aren't you reporting it in a bug report, or checking if it's already been fixed in a later release?

What do you mean? You CAN still use it as you did. Most people carry on saying the Folder View widget lets you use the icons as you did in the past, but I've also found that just drag-dropping an application icon to the desktop works just fine as well. You CAN use it as you used to, but for people who want a desktop capable of more, then this is a huge step (in fact, it's a huge step anyway).

Call me old fashion but I prefer functionality over eye candy. If doesn't feel comfortable and intuitive to use I don't care how pretty it is it has to go. KDE 4.X just does not feel like a polished product and WTF with changing how I use my desktop it's like going back to win 3.x but with eye candy sorry you fail.

Last time I used KDE 4.x I replaced it with gnome after just 15 minutes just to get things done WTF were the KDE devs smoking when they made their decisions. I used KDE 3 quite a bit but 4 is trash and I will not use it ever and will instead use gnome,xfce,and fwm95.

Last time I had KDE4 on my system I just couldn't use Kwin's composite effects, it just wasn't usable. But I just installed Kubuntu 8.10 on my system yesterday and it was surprisingly smooth with the latest Nvidia drivers. Kwin's composite effects were surprisingly nimble and "felt" light and fast. So a big improvement there. There are minor glitches yes, but all fixable and not deal breakers. The new KDE4 apps are looking great too.

No they don't. Metacity doesn't add all those effects like 3D cube etc. It only makes some compositing needed applications work and adds shadows under the windows. I can't use Compiz, but I can use Metacity.

i think we should use compiz fusion. it works fine with mine, on my dell latitude d600 laptop, and i have no special graphics card, just the one with the laptop. plus, you can switch back to the gtk window decorator and metacity.

I also have an ATI card in my laptop. ATI don't make proper drivers for Linux at the moment and have very poor support for older cards. Nvidia and intel on the other hand work great.

It says Kubuntu because you installed KDE. Since the only difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu is GNOME vs. KDE, you have essentially changed to Kubuntu. You can change the loading display in System>Administration>Login Window>Local.

oooooooo Gnome Do is so quick! It's so quick it hurts? I hurts that I've just spent a full 30 minutes (!)!(!)!(!) trying to figure out what friggin hot-key should be used to 'BRING UP DO' .... Finally: you made it, after a full 2'23" you accidentally mention 'Command-Space'. From there it was just another 10 seconds to finding that 'Command' means 'Windows' on my keyboard. Why is this not (1) on the wiki (2) in the manpage (3) in the 'fist-launch' dialog ?!?!?!

I got my invite today. I love Streamy. I've been a loyal Digg user since it started. Streamy is nothing like Digg. Let's just say, they both can coexist. I read Digg stories directly on Streamy. It's fun to play with and is now #2 on my bookmarks list. Keep up the good work guys.

I used recordmydesktop. It is in active development and the mouse-follow was inplemented a quite a while ago. In fact I suggested it to the dev and it took him only a week to put out a new release with the mouse-follow feature. For this video I activated full-frame-capture, mouse-follow and added "-width 640 -height 480" in the "additional options" section. recordmydesktop is a cmd-line program but has nice GUIs for KDE and Gnome.

whole-drive enyryption only works with windows. for linux there are other (more integrated) options to achieve this (dm-crypt/cryptsetup). The performance does go down, but you can live with it. I would certainly not use it on devices where I store data for video or audio editing. Think disabling DMA-Mode. I used SHA-512 because it is the most secure (currently) and thwofish-serpent just for demonstration purposes. more encryption means less performance.

Yes that will switch between the windows of one app. But that's a two step process. CMD+Tab to get to the app you want and then CMB+` to get to the specific app window. With this setup you can switch between all your windows at once and go right to the one you need.

"Witch" feels like it's mainly for people switching to Mac from Windows. The workflow is certainly not one of a verteran Mac user - but it feels very Windows-y. I use 2 standard Mac key-commands 1) Command-Tab and 2) Option-Click... and I can find any window pretty darn quick. Minimizing Widows - although a feature in Mac oS X - is a "Windows-y" workflow.

Press F9 or F10 to expose. Then press TAB to cycle through all apps. with the arrows you can choose a window and click/spacebar on it to make it active. you can also use Apple+TAB in expose! then you can better switch applications. I use apple+tab to close apps. Just press apple+tab and while holding Apple, choose an application with tab and press Q. You can also press apple+~(the character right to SHIFT for non-us keyboard) to cycle through all windows of the current application
