! I think you must condider the number of notes you can do on two guitar fretboards simultaneously, and the number of notes you can do on a piano fingerboard..there's not too much difference (12 notes against 10)..by the way, this guy is fantastic!

Good observation. It is like playing multiple pianos, as any given note -- like middle c -- appears only once on a keyboard, but numerous times on a guitar.

I understand alot of younger guy's may not be familiar with the total Stanley Clarke of the 70's and 80's until the present. Every time he comes to Washington, DC I've never missed a show of his. After almost 40 years of playing he is still the most complete bassist out there. I've seen him almost do everything on both the electric and accoustic. His more an accoustic player than electric if you can believe that.

Anyone know where there's an accurate tab on what he's actually playing here? Most other players (and tabs) I've seen don't seem to use that characteristic slide from 3rd to 5th and the 4th measure is completely different. I've tried re-recording and slowing the sound. I'll never understand how some can knock down successful people. If you've sold as many records and filled as many seats as Ralph then the way you slight him might hold some creedence. But I'll guarantee those who knock his abilities haven't accomplished near as much. By the way I've heard of Stanley Style, Scruggs Style, Crowe Style, etc. but I've never heard of "Fluffyice" style....but that would sound as stupid as the screen name now wouldn't it.

If you're going to knock down Ralph's playing at least take the time to listen to it and come up with your own opinion and don't plageurise what you've heard the Scruggs-stlye pickers spouting out at your local jam session. Ralph doesn't play close to the bridge no more than Scruggs, just look at this video, his hand is in the middle of the head. It's the crack of the archtop tone ring that gives that sound not the position of Ralph's hand.

When I bought my first SJ album (on vinyl!) back in the early 80s it was this song that took me head off. I love the Beatles and I think he does capture so much of the essence, while using it as an improve vehicle (this IS jazz, dudes). Playing it really isn't that difficult (speaking from experience; I own one.) But to be able to solo and play the higher notes as well as he does, it takes a lot of time studying the instrument, and slap n' pop technique takes a very long time to master because it's done completely differently on an upright (much more difficult).

he doesn't sweep pick on that at all. He's playing arpeggios with legato/tapping, love that song btw, thanks for posting! :) I don't think he beats the shit out of all those metal players who sweep pick btw. It's different techniques. I would agree that this is more complicated technical and also melodically. It's incredible how much emotion he puts in it, even when playing like this. Remarkable guitarist, very very talented and very very VERY good!

Whitekid, I absolutely agree with you: this solo is, relatively speaking, shit. When compared to Victor Wooten, Richard Bona, Oteil Burbridge, Edgar Meyer, Christain McBride, NHOP, Bill Dickens, Alain Caron, and Jeff Andrews, this solo doesn't measure up. It doesn't really groove, he constantly fudges notes, there is no unifying theme, and most importantly, it appears to be nothing more than bravado.

Well, it's a rendition of a song that over the years was reborn several times. It's the opening of "In Celebration Of The Human Spirit" recorded Sept. 14-24 1981 on The Fuse One Recordings which later became the song "Tradition" from the "If This Bass Can Only Talk" album in 1988 then became "What if I forget the champagne" from the East River Drive CD in 1993. This show was filmed in late 1987 & "If This Bass can only talk" album was released in April of 1988 I think he was promoting that song.
