I think he was just smashing it for kicks. Someone of his age, of his experience, lives for that moment. I performed regularly, and plan on continuing doing so soon, once I get a drummer/vocalist but when I performed I felt like THE SHIT when I was onstage, and I felt like I wanted to smash something. Sometimes, you just need to fuck the 'communication' aspects of what you're doing and just do what you feel like. That's what music is about. Also, it was fucking awesome.

Actually I'm not 8yrs old I'm 42yrs old. I apologise to those who were offended by my comments. To demean the status of the guitarist in question or the Who as one of rock's best wasn't my intention. As an ardent music lover I am simply questioning the musical and artistic integrity of smashing a guitar. Music is about communication, and to smash that means ( the guitar) of communication is odd to me. One doesn't see Clapton, Beck, Cale, Santana, Van Halen, Atkins,or Pat Metheny doing this.

what townsend did is an art all of its own. In the 60s, an age of cultural rethinking, new forms of art and concepts began to spring up. One was called self destructive art. In order to make a statement on how we treat the planet, you would take something of great value and break it. In this case,a fender strat. Doing it today makes a bigger statement than it did then. Its a form of protest that is meant to enlighten you & make you react. It also just looks kick ass...

What an absolute looney tune, a freaki' whacko , to deliberatley and intentionally smash a perfectly good guitar for the sake of so called showmanship, and at an age when he should know better, is utterly obscene. It shows no respect, no reverence for the art of the instrument, and is a total waste. Such a deliberate display of arrogance and vandalism is aboslutely vile. To call this entertainment is a disgrace. One would expect more maturity and unsight from a man of that age. Appalling.

Jimi was a great musician, but he wasn't anywhere near as great as anybody in The Who. None of the four members of The Who were virtuosos, but they were all geniuses. Roger is one of the most passionate vocalists in rock history, John revolutionized the bass, Keith took the drums to a completely different level, and Pete's enraged guitar playing and revolutionary use of feedback paved the way for musicians like Hendrix. Not to mention that Pete is also one of the finest songwriters in pop/rock.

I love Pete and his music. Empty Glass is an album that can stand up with The Who. What is sad is that like many other musicians (Clapton and the Stones come to mind immediately) he was at his musical best when he was at his personal worst. There is a lot of sexual imagery in this video from beginning to end, but who cares? It is an all time classic song that I will always love and that will live forever. God bless you Pete. agreed - like any good lyrics, these are vague enough to be whatever you interpret. Those who have made them entirely "homoerotic" probably have subconscious, irrational fears on the issue. On the other end of the spectrum, some may interpret them as simply boys drunk (yet innocent enough) night out. Others may just interpret as a commentary on reality. In any instance, the song is cool, the album is brilliant and further solidifies Pete's status as THE omnipotent badass rocker on earth.

I liked this song as a youngster. Until I saw the video. I was, and am befuddled by it. The lyrics are pretty explicit. It's clearly a homoerotic song folks. I mean, I hate to be the one to break the bad news to the other posters, but it clearly is pretty gay. I mean, george Michael, elton John etc are pretty blatant about their sexuality in vids. What's scary about this is he's "one of the guys"...I think that's the vibe that flipped me out, as a kid.

Pete Townshend is incredible. This song is in my top five favorites of his songs. All of his lyrics are just so visceral and the music he writes to accompany them is always exquisitely beautiful, even the really hard rocking ones. His sense of melody and rhythm is truly unerring.
