Like with Journey, the vocalist is a passable fill-in, and at least he reminds us of DB's stylings. The 70's had a raw sound that seems lacking today, so at least the folks in Heep, Priest, AC/DC etc. are keeping the torch going. Metal I am, Metal I will always be. Cheers.

The first lead vocal of a popular band will always be "The One". It's the combinaton of feeling+sound+memory that makes it as it should be. A new lead vocal very rarely do better than the first. SAGA's (Can. progrock 4 those 2 dumb 2 know LOL ;-) lead vocal Michael Sadler stopped Dec.'07 :-( they will never b the same.. *SIGH*. That's just how it is. Yes, that was Manfred Mann, of all people. To also answer vjwalcek's question below, the year that song was recorded was 1971. It was on the 'Look at Yourself' album, and they played it a lot on tour throughout 1972. I was privileged to see Uriah Heep three times. The only group I liked as much in 'live' performance was Pink Floyd. Uriah Heep from 1970 to 1976 - when David Byron was vocalist - was arguably the best rock band in the world. We won't see their like again soon, unfortunately.

A few years back, I heard a really haunting song called "Come away Melinda". It was sung by a girl called Barry St. John and it just scraped into the top 50 (in Britain) at the end of 1965. She had a really beautiful, plaintive voice and I seem to remember there being a chorus in it sung by children. It didn't sound anything like Uriah Heep's - as good as their version is - I presume it was the same song. Perhaps someone could track it down to compare and contrast!

What's all this about who's the best between David Byron and Bernie Shaw. They're both bloody brilliant singers. I used to see Bernie in 1980 in the Golden Lion in Fulham when he was in 'Paris' (later became Grand Prix) - they were INCREDIBLE. He was such a great frontman even then and I'm so glad he's found regular work ever since with Praying Mantis and for the last twenty one years - Uriah Heep. There is one thing that has to be said about this video though - where does Phil get his shirts?!

It's allmost "painful" to listen to this, one among many, Uriah Heep masterpiece... I remember when it came out. I was 15 years old and was blown away, like so many others, by their warm, dreamy, massively heavy rock songs, owerflowing with energy. These guys, with Davids sensual and beautiful voice, knew how to create "landscapes' of sound to explore.. They took us for a ride into their dreamscapes, of pure magic... and the lyrics.. AWESOME!!! totally...the 70s Nazareth for exemple is really close stylistically to deep purple...they were friends and they toured together at that time... and there s connection between every hard rock band of that time and even to 70s pop rock sometimes... a band like Manfred Mann s Earth Band is really close 2 hard rock at the beg. of the 70s...they were influenced by Purple (&Floyd)on some songs...that s a big web... Uriah Heep had their own style, much more symphonic, all of them singing along, much more pop and soul elements if you listen carefully. There were hardly any guitar riffs in Uriah Heep songs, Ken Hensley's keyboards always overshadowed Mick Box's guitar.

I can't compare Uriah Heep to Deep Purple, they 're quite different. Heep's music was actually never based on guitar riffs, they always had a more melodic and symphonic approach to the songs.

That's Mick Box on the Strat, right? And Ken Hensley is playing guitar on this too, right? I really dig this song, although there seems to be some melancholy to it. Heep seem stylistically close to Deep Purple, but Box doesn't seem a flashy guitarist like Tommy Bolin or Blackmore. Not a criticism.

All one has to do is search for the older versions of this song. The tempos are always too fast, the recordings are awful, the band is on so many drugs it's amazing they can even stand. This is by far the best line-up Uriah Heep has had. With all due respect to the GREAT David Byron and Ken Hensley. Gary Thain too.

Go back with these guys for 30+ years and this is likely their best ever. Recall a concert in Allentown PA (1973) which was a rather odd hybrid bill with the Heep leading the way with virtual unknowns Earth Wind and Fire and ZZ Top sharing the stage. Thanks for posting.

i actually find it quite bizarre to listen to the other lead singers Heep had after Byron....no disrespect to them...but how could anyone have the nerve to try and sing Byron's songs...it is a travesty really...Heep was Byron...without him they continued but how do you replace that voice...none of the replacements came close...but they did try to keep the dream alive...

I remember seeing heep with the line up Kerslake, Thain, Box, Hensley and of course Byron...they were the best of course cos only Byron could ever sing that way....kinda haunting still brings back memories...and yes Mercury was the only real front man for Queen-Heep were never the same after Byron was sacked, and the line up changed beyond description...maybe Box is the only one left, but they were all geniuses in their own way..all i know is that this line up was the best and live they were ACE

I'm sure someone will take offense at this, but I've always felt a kinship of spirit between the original Uriah Heep and Queen. Maybe it was David Byron's voice and his presence that were even more visible in Freddy Mercury. I'm not really sure.

Did you ever see the CLASSIC LINE-UP in concert: Byron,Hensley,Box,Thain and Kerslake ? Yeah, I would like to see that idiot band even on the same bill with any of the greats from the 70's. It's like watching little boys playing with BIG BOYS, who paid their dues in English clubs for years before they even got a record contract; not somebody that that was seen in PEOPLE magazine with the great Ashley Simpson.

VINYL RULES! I've been collecting records since 1976, and still search used cd/lp stores for rare records and bootlegs. Most folks have no idea how many great lp's have NEVER released on cd! I smile whenever I'm listening to a rare oop(out of print) record, with that warm, living analog sound tha cds lack. The cool thing is even burned to cdr, that thick, needle singing in the groove sound is still there, and still sounds richer than a tinny factory cd! (I use a Yamaha PF-800 turntable).

My pleasure startover942! I seriously want to hear a reel to reel machine, I've never got the opportunity! So back then, the reel to reel was the best sounding???? I started out with 8-tracks in the begining of the '80s as a 3-4 year old. There's nothing like a good vinyl record in mint condition playing on a high end turntable. People embraced CDs so quickly because their turntables sounded horrible. Vinyl pressings are on the rebound, 180g and 200g pressings.
