Yep it was me that said he couldnt sing. John, in his autobiography, would back that up with "had a vocal range of almost an octave" (or similar). But that doesnt detract from the fact that the guy is pure entertainment. Im a massive fan, he should have had more success and Id agree with the comment on brilliant songs, "Josephine", "What a Woman", "Greeny Blue", "Misty Mountain" and loads more... I wish him all the success in the world, he deserves it.

I saw him for the first time around ´73 when he used to play in a pub in oxford and he used to swing down on a rope hanging from the ceiling, while doing a tarzan impression ! I´ve read a message on this site that said he couldn´t sing, couldn´t play and couldn´t even walk right, I don´t agree with any that and apart from being a great live act, he wrote some brilliant songs, like "trying times" . . . . I saw them in Birmingham around 1977-8. Impossible to forget - I feel lucky to have seen their certain mad genius at work. It was mayhem - their amp kept stopping and they kept kicking it to make it work while still playing and singing. Wild Willie was playing the same broken guitar excellently. wow... this song is always beautiful. i first heard it done by jane's addiction (a fantastic version, by the way). fans of the song should check out the tv series "freaks and geeks". the last scene of the final episode, touchingly highlights this song. i never liked the dead that much, but i always had tremendous respect for them, and their contribution to not only music, but culture in general... not to mention that they turned the music biz on it's side, by playing the game their own way. :)

Well then you don't deny at all that they were good in any case. You just seem too sure of yourself - 'tis not good. Just to remind you if you have forgotten: one of BOC's primary influence was the Byrds. And also they were one of the most overrated bands of the 70's. in the early 70s BOC were somewhat unique, you know, the whole tongue in cheek satire of metal at the time. But it didn't stop them from turning into just another lame metal band in their latter days. And that's why they're so rhubbish in my book now. All the other bands i mentioned, floyd, zep, stones etc. All were unique and different from one another. The Who made a Rock Opera, Zep experimented with everything, floyd was just fucking tripping. Hell man, Bob Marley was a LEGEND.

One of the great versions of this song is by the Blind Boys Of Alabama, and it's interesting that Gilmour has chosen to use a gospelly choir to back him here. It's not a bad version but, IMHO, the ORIGINAL recording by Richard & Linda Thompson - not the live version on YT - has a spine-chilling quality that no other version can match.
