I asked him autograph the album from which this song comes, "Time For Tyner"; '68 on Blue Note, recorded live at a Coltrane Tribute concert in 'Trane's home state of NC. He offered to sign the back of the album cover, so as not to write over the picture of his face on the front! My favorite jazz pianist!!

This video is truly awesome. Max and Abbey made a true classic jazz album. Max was already considered a great jazz drummer and Abbey was known as an actress and jazz diva. I feel Abbey's best performance in a movie was "Nothing But A Man", starring Abbey and Ivan Dixon. This video is like finding a gold mine. Abbey is still making great music.

Looks like this came around the time of Circle and early Weather Report, before Braxton's classic albums of the 70's - looks like Miroslav (friggin' monster), Chick, and the drummer (sounds like Roy Haynes - Jack DeJohnette?). Great band, Braxton sounds pretty good - better yet, check out the Avant Bop tunes on Montreux-Berlin concerts 1976!

In my experience, you can't convert the doubters. When I played in college other student musicians playing Jazz could barely hang on, as it is, so when challenged with a new idea that required developing skills and theory, they rejected it out of hand. The same with many listeners. I suggest fans just focus upon what you leave and ignore the negative. Braxton's dealt with this since '67!!! We're not going to change them NOW after 30 yrs!

devi provarlo anche tu! ho visto forse centinaia di concerti ma quando suonano loro dal vivo... ti mandano in estasi. è un esperienza da fare, anche perché scelgono locations molto interessanti (una volta ho visto rava nel cortile di un monastero, un altra tutti insieme (rava, fresu, bollani, gatto e pietropaoli) in un teatro, indescrivibile) e si viene a creare un ambiente quasi familiare, come se fossero li per pochi intimi :) credimi, è una cosa da provare!

When listening to this strata of jazz for the first time, you're right, listening to other material for the underlying structure is helpful; also listening to other, older artists, to hear the progression that jazz has evolved to help the listener anticipate the alternative voicings that would be coming from a Dolphy or Coltrain (or later on, a Cecil Taylor)
